In Detroit, the Red Wings returned home after giving up a late to the New York Rangers n a loss on Wednesday night.
Alex Lyon made 34 saves, and the Red Wings handed the visiting Chicago Blackhawks a 5-1 loss.
“Our best player was our goalie,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “They outchanced us, outshot us and every underlying category is going to say they were better than us, but Alex bailed us out.
“… We were so much better last night. We didn’t get an outcome in New York, but our performance was pretty good. Tonight, our performance wasn’t very good, but we got the outcome.”
Detroit improved to 12-7-3.
Chicago took a 1-0 lead at 2:29 of the first period off a shorthanded marker from J.T. Compher, it was his first of a double on the night,
Chicago dropped to7-14-0.
“We’re not doing anything right,” Chicago’s Tyler Johnson said. “It’s a privilege to be out there, and this is embarrassing.”
Lukas Reichel was the lone striker for the Hawks. His goal tied the game, 1-1, at 3:20 during the same power play.
“I think we gave them their first three goals, so we were behind the 8-ball after that,” Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said. “We were chasing uphill the rest of the game.”
Robby Fabbri, who also struck for a pair of goals in the win, scored at 8:42 to give Detroit a 2-1 lead.
“That was insane,” Compher said. “That was one of the nicest goals I’ve ever seen in person.”
Ben Chiarot scored five minutes into the middle frame for a 3-1 lead for the Red Wings.
Compher scored off the power play for his double at 5:53 for a 4-1 lead to Detroit.
“We had kind of a rough stretch on special teams, but I think the power play is buzzing again,” Compher said. “That kind of feeds into the whole team.”
Fabbri double came midway through the third period, off the power play, for the 5-1 final.
Petr Mrazek made 24 saves in the loss.
