Detroit rally to force OT, lose 5-4, to Ottawa Sens blow big lead, win in OT

In Stockholm, the Ottawa Senators built a 4-0 lead over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday through the early middle frame.

The Red Wings scored four times in the second to tie the game, 4-4, after two periods of play.

A scoreless third led an extra session where Tim Stützle  struck for the game-winner with two seconds left in the session for a 5-4 win to the Senators.

“I never really played [baseball] growing up,” Stutzle said. “I think it was pretty lucky, I knew we didn’t have a lot of time there left and I just tried to get it on the net. It was a great play there by Drake to get it to me.”

Brady Tkachuk hit for a double in the first period to stake the Senators to a 2-0 lead.

“It definitely feels good,” said Tkachuk. “Of course, there’s things we need to clean up but I think it showed a little maturity there in the third period because of course the second didn’t go our way so just simplify, play the right way and I wouldn’t say just get it to overtime but just play the right way and do it one shift at a time. I was proud of the maturity that we showed there in the third and of course it was an unreal play to finish it off.”

Ottawa improved to 7-7-0 on the win.

Joonas Korpisalo made 37 saves in the win.

Ottawa took a 3-0 lead in the first period when Jake Sanderson struck at 13:09, the goal came on a 4-on-4 situation.

“We thought we gave them too much in the first period,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “We took a retaliatory penalty and then we missed two assignments on the 4-on-4 and the Tkachuk second goal. That was a tough start, a tough three plays after we had a good start.”

Josh Norris pushed the lead to 4-0 with 78 seconds gone in the middle frame.

Detroit replied with a four-goal outburst that lasted less than nine minutes in the second period.

The outburst started when Swedish native Lucas Raymond scored to trim the deficit to 4-1 for Detroit.

“It’s special scoring at home but it would have been a lot better with a win here tonight,” Raymond said. “The point (we earned) is obviously huge especially in this league. It stings coming back from 4-0. We’re feeling really good but we spent a lot of time in the penalty box which hurt us a lot.”

The Red Wings dropped to 8-5-3.

Three more goals followed in quick succession with David Perron hitting at 13:20 for a 4-2.

“I thought we come out, looked maybe a little nervous in the first period,” Senators coach D.J. Smith said. “I thought we scored easy, we put it in the net but I don’t think it was indicative maybe of the play, and that kind of lulled us to sleep. We didn’t forecheck in the second period, we looked like we just wanted to hang on to it and kill the clock and clearly we got burned, but I’m proud of the guys, between periods, to regroup, come back out and stick with it.”

Alex DeBrincat added a marker at 16:33  for a 4-3 count.

Shayne Gostisbehere finished the rally at 17:12 to tie the game, 4-4.

James Reimer made 29 saves in the loss.
