In Detroit, Dylan Larkin’s second goal of the came in the extra session on Saturday to give the Red Wings a 3-2 win over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.
“I saw he was just out of his net and I just tried to hit that spot,” Larkin said. “That’s a huge win for us.”
Alex Nedeljkovic made 35 saves in the Detroit win.
“I thought he was outstanding with controlling rebounds tonight,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “When you are an undersized goalie (6-0, 203), you need the puck to stick to you, and that’s even more true against Montreal. They are so good at going hard to the net. You can’t give them rebounds.”
The Red Wings improved to 8-6-2.
Ryan Poehling and Chris Wideman were the Montreal strikers.
“It felt great to get one,” Poehling said. “I thought we played a very good game, but we fell asleep for a couple minutes in the second period. That’s all it takes in this league.”
Wideman’s goal in early minutes of the third period, tied the game, 2-2, making the extra session necessary.
The Habs dropped to 4-10-2.
Detroit’s Pius Suter added a single marker in regulation.
Sam Montembeault, 22 saves, relieved Jake Allen who was injured in the opening frame. Allen had eight saves.
“It’s a tough situation for us when Jake can’t come back for the second period, and then they take the lead,” Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme said. “But we kept playing and I thought we had a really good third period. It’s a shame we couldn’t win it in overtime.”
