Red Wings improved to 19-16-4.

The Kings took a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Adrian Kempe scored at 1:50 of the opening stanza to stake the Kings to a 1-0 lead.

“I think we tried to play simple, play hard, get the puck to the net as much as we could, and got rewarded with two goals,” Kempe said. “So, it was a good job by my linemates and I’m just trying to be in the right place at the right time.”

LA extended it to 2-0 at Matt Roy hit for his first of the campaign at 4:18.

“It was not a very good first period by us,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “For us to play that poorly in the first period and to bounce back like that in the second against a very good team, it’s a quality win for us.”

“I think they woke us up a little bit, got us on our game, and we saw that made us successful there in the second period,” Detroit’s Robby Fabbri said. “And we kept it going.”

Fabbri had a double on the night, his first came midway through the second period to trim the deficit to 2-1.

Detroit’s Jeff Petry knotted it up, 2-2, at 17:21 of the middle frame.

LA dropped to 20-9-6 off their fourth straight loss.

Fabbri hit for his double at 5:24 of the third period for a 3-2 lead to the Red Wings.

“A game like that, you’ve got to grind it out for a full 60 minutes, overtime and the shootout,” Fabbri said. “It took everyone.”

Kempe hit for his double at 15:43 of the third to tie the game, 3-3, sending it to extra time which solved nothing. David Rittich made 24 saves in the loss.

“At the end of the night, we’re kind of disappointed just leaving with one point,” Kempe said. “I think we played good enough to win.”
