Desharnais’ OT goal gives Oilers win and 3-2 series lead over Sharks

In Edmonton Thursday, David Desharnais scored at 18:15 of overtime to give the Oilers a 4-3 win and 3-2 series lead over the San Jose Sharks.

“I saw everyone was a little tired on the ice, so I just jumped in the hole and [Draisaitl] made a really good pass, and I just wanted to shoot it as quick as I could,” Desharnais said. “It went in. I’m happy.”

The Oilers needed a late goal from Oscar Klefbom, to tie game at 3-3.

“Our group believes,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “We know how bad we played in Game 4, but we were able to park it, and start again, make amends. It didn’t look good for us, but we kept at it, and when we do that, we’re a tough out. I’d like to think we learned our lesson now, that when you have a little bit of success, you have to take it to another level on Saturday.”

Patrick Maroon and Mark Letestu also scored for the Oilers.

Cam Talbot made 27 saves in a rebound game for him to get the win.

The Oilers outshot the Sharks 14-2 in the overtime.

“We thought eventually it was going to go in,” Letestu said. “He’s (Sharks goalie Martin Jones) only human. Eventually the puck’s going to find a way to the back of the net. I thought we were pressing the right way. We weren’t taking too many chances, they were just kind of coming for us.”

David Schlemko, Mikkel Boedker and Patrick Marleau struck for goals for the Sharks.

“It’s always disappointing to lose, losing [stinks],” San Jose’s Joe Pavelski said. “There is no way around that. We battled hard tonight and did some good things to take that 3-1 lead, but unfortunately we couldn’t battle it out.”

Martin Jones made 44 saves in taking the loss.

“I thought we played a pretty good game, maybe we sat back a little in the third,” Schlemko said. “I thought we did a good job limiting their chances. They had one good shot that they buried. Maybe we weren’t on the attack as much as we were in the first two periods.”
