Davies proud of Stingrays’ season

Captain Matty Davies was full of pride as he reflected on an excellent season for Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays.

Stingrays saw their hopes of reaching the Elite League play-off final fall agonisingly short after a 3-2 defeat to Sheffield Steelers at the National Ice Centre on Saturday.

Mathieu Roy scored the game-winning goal with just four seconds remaining with Stingrays’ protests for high sticks in vain following a review. Hull Stingrays logo

Stingrays, who finished a joint club record seventh in the Elite League, then ended the campaign with an 8-6 defeat to Belfast Giants in the third v fourth-placed play-off on Sunday.

Davies, in his first season as captain of his hometown club, said: “I have never been so annoyed or frustrated as I was on Saturday. I am so gutted for the lads and everyone in the club.

“The lads played unbelievable and deserved more than that. To lose a game on a call like that should not happen.

“The lads have been brilliant all season and I really do believe we would have got to the final. But I am really proud of the guys for the effort they have put in all season.

“This is the best team I have seen in Hull. It is an all-round team which just does not know when it is beaten.

“They have a ridiculous will to win, they are a great group of guys and they went to the finals weekend, worked hard and given everything for the club and you can’t ask for any more.

“We wanted to get into the final and I just wish they had a better outcome. But I am so proud of them all.”
