Danbury rallies late to victory over River Drivers

403952_raw BERLIN, NH – The Danbury Titans went on the road and scored three unanswered goals in the third period to come from behind and defeat the Berlin RiverDrivers, 4-2. Tyler Gjurich and Mike Driscoll each scored twice, and Nikita Ivandikov made 40 saves to secure his second win in as many games.

After out shooting the RiverDrivers 12-0 to begin the game, Gjurich would score late in the first period to stake Danbury out to the lead by intermission. John Scorcia and Dean Yakura had the assists on Gjurich’s league leading 43rd goal of the season. His scoring rate is nearly unprecedented, as Gjurich chases Wayne Gretzky’s record 50 goals in 39 games.

Berlin’s David Brancik would score on the power play and tie the game halfway through the second period, assisted by Tom Tracy and Tyler Prendergast, recently returned from Peoria of the SPHL. The Titans have had the most players called up this year in the FHL, with Ryan Patsch and Alex Vazzano, among others, still on loan. Tracy would then put Berlin ahead with only 3 seconds remaining in the period to give the RiverDrivers the lead and momentum into the third period.

Danbury’s Phil Esposito made clear after last night’s game how important a road win would be, especially with injuries to Brett Liscomb, Steve Brown, and Justin Blazcak. Danbury seized the opportunity and were led by Tyler Gjurich’s second of the game on the power play goal just 3:27 into the third period. Gjurich needs four goals tomorrow against Berlin to tie Gretzky’s record. Danbury would take the lead for good with another power play goal courtesy of Mike Driscoll with three minutes left to play. He would add an unassisted insurance goal 44 seconds later, securing Danbury’s fourth win in a row.
