BROOKLYN, NY – Michael Thomson tallied the game winning goal and Matt Puntureri helped with four points to lead the New York Aviators over the Danbury Whalers, 5-2, in Federal Hockey League action. The win also snapped a four game losing streak for the A’s, and also gives them their seventh victory on home ice. New York got on the board first in the opening period, as Jesse Felten scored his fourth of the season on the power play at the 18:44 mark. Felten made a beautiful move short side, and roofed it over Danbury net minder Nick Niedert to give the Aviators a 1-0 lead. The Aviators picked up where they left off in the first period with another power play goal in the second. KC Timmons tallied his eighth of the season 3:59 in with a quick wrister that beat Niedert through the five-hole for a 2-0 edge. However, Danbury cut the lead to 2-1 after Matt Caranci netted his third of the campaign. Caranci took a quick shot on the near side that hand cuffed A’s goaltender Kevin Druce just eight seconds later. New York regained their two goal led with another power play tally coming from Thomson at the 12:51 mark. Thomson’s blast got past the screened Niedert for his sixth marker of the season, which gave the A’s a 3-1 advantage. In the final frame, Danbury cut the lead to 4-2 with a power play tally from newcomer Adam Blanchette halfway though the third. The A’s though did not stop, and iced the game with a late goal from Chris Holmes whose fifth of the season put it out of reach at 5-2. Druce made 33 saves to collect his eighth win, while Niedert falls to 10-8-2 despite putting aside 24 shots. New York moves to 11-10-2 on the season, as the Whalers drop to 10-10-2.
