BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – After back-and-forth scoring, Philippe Paradis struck late in the third to force overtime, but the Syracuse Crunch were unable to complete a comeback and fell to the Binghamton Senators, 4-3, in the extra frame tonight at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Crunch held the lead on two different occasions off markers from Mike Angelidis and Tanner Richard. Paradis brought the team back from their first disadvantage in the third period. Despite the loss, the Crunch pick up one point tonight as they move to 16-14-6-1 on the season and 4-0-1-0 in the 10-game season series. The Senators now sit at 14-19-3-0.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 31 of 35 shots in defeat. His Senators counterpart, Scott Greenham, earned the victory making 34 saves. Syracuse was unable to convert on five power play opportunities, while Binghamton struck on 1-of-2.
The Crunch opened scoring at the 6:46 mark of the first period. Matt Taormina fired on net from the left wing side. Greenham made the initial save, but Angelidis was able to sneak the rebound past him and across the goal line. Anthony DeAngelo tallied the secondary helper.
Minutes before the first intermission, the Senators solved Gudlevskis and evened the score. Ryan Dzingel beat a Crunch defender in a race to the end boards and gained control of the puck. He threw it across the slot for to Matt Puempel redirect into the net.
Syracuse took the lead for a second time 2:04 into the middle stanza. While the goaltender was pulled over to the left post, Angelidis slid the puck over for Richard to chip in the back door for his third of the season. Jake Dotchin recorded a point on the go-ahead goal. However, Binghamton climbed back to knot the score, 2-2, six minutes later when Nick Paul netted a slap shot from the top of the right circle while on the power play. Assists went to Tobias Lindberg and Patrick Mullen.
Halfway into the third period, the Senators went one up on Syracuse for the first time. Gudlevskis stopped Eric O’Dell’s shot from the right wing, but kicked the rebound out for Buddy Robinson to clean up into an open net.
The Crunch weren’t done and fought back to tie the game and force overtime with 4:58 remaining in regulation. Taormina fired a shot from the left point that was tipped in front of the cage by Paradis. Richard recorded a multi-point game with the secondary assist on the equalizer.
Syracuse had strong scoring changes early in the overtime period, but were unable to find the back of the net. Dzingel finally netted the game-winner for Binghamton at the 1:36 mark with the help of O’Dell and Michael Kostka.
