SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Crunch downed the Binghamton Senators tonight, 2-1, during the 22nd home opener presented by Upstate University Hospital tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Jeff Tambellini potted two goals to lift the Crunch over the Senators and spring a two-game point streak.
Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 27 of 28 shots on goal as he worked his way to his second consecutive win. Senators netminder Matt O’Connor turned aside 24 of 26 Crunch attempts. Neither team was able to convert on any of their five power-play opportunities.
The Crunch came out quick, notching the first tally of the game just 16 seconds into the opening frame. Tambellini received a pass from Adam Erne on the right wing side and fired one past the Senators’ rookie netminder. Dylan Blujus recorded a point for the secondary assist.
Binghamton evened the score at the 4:58 mark of the second period by capitalizing on a turnover. Cole Schneider stole the puck at center ice after an errant pass. He faced Gudlevskis on his own and beat the goaltender with quick wrist shot.
With 2:17 remaining in the game, Tambellini found the back of the net for the second time. He ripped a one-timer from the right circle to secure a Crunch victory. Anthony DeAngelo and Mike Blunden earned credit for the helpers.
