Crucial win for Stingrays

Rapid Solicitors Hull Stingrays produced another cracking comeback to post a vital 5-4 victory after penalty shots over Edinburgh Capitals at Hull Arena.

Carl Lauzon converted the winning shot having netted the game-tying goal with 3.06 left in regulation time which took the match to overtime.

Stingrays, without captain Matty Davies and assistants Zach Hervato and Yan Turcotte, found themselves 3-0 down by the end of the first period. Hull Stingrays logo

Jade Portwood got a short-handed go-ahead goal at 6.56 before further strikes from Jay King (15.14) and Loren Barron (18.44).

But three markers inside a fantastic four-minute spell saw Stingrays tie the game with Dominic Osman’s powerplay rocket at 24.26 being followed by a Cory Tanaka tally (25.09) and Eric Galbraith’s goal (27.58).

However, Capitals restored their lead 30 seconds later through Greg Collins. Lauzon made it 4-4 with just over three minutes left and secured the extra point after Jordan Mayer (Stingrays) and Portwood scored in the shoot-out.

The win moves Stingrays into seventh place and five points clear of Capitals in ninth with five games left.

Player-coach Omar Pacha said: “It was a crucial win and we knew we needed the two points. We knew it was the most important game of the year.

“After the first period I was frustrated and disappointed because there was a lack of execution on certain plays.

“But we battled through it, we got a good second and third period and we managed to win the game. We did it the hard way but we found a way to get the result.”
