Crosby OT strike sends Pens past Flyers

In Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia Flyers rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to force extra time on Friday night, but Sidney Crosby made the extra time short when he scored with just 55 seconds gone for a 4-3 Penguins win.

“We’ve got a lot of division games, tough opponents,” Crosby said. “Every point is crucial. I think you always look at this time of year when your team has to elevate your game, everyone else is doing the same. So we’re going to try to do that.”

Tristan Jarry made 27 saves in the win.

Tyler Pitlick and Scott Laughton rallied the Flyers from the two-goal hole.

“I liked our 5-on-5 game tonight,” Philadelphia coach Alain Vigneault said. “Thought we got better, and our execution got better, as the game went on, both defensively and offensively. Against a pretty good hockey team, we’ve played five pretty good periods of hockey. Now we got a point tonight.”

Bryan Rust, Evgeny Malkin and Kris Letang scored for the Pens.

“We definitely didn’t have our best [in the third period],” Rust said. “We gave them quality looks there, but give a lot of credit to [Jarry]. He made some really big saves for us. We were able to push it to overtime and win it there.”

Jakub Voracek put the Flyers up 1-0 with 29 seconds left in the opening frame.

“Obviously, you want to get two points,” Pitlick said. “It is what it is. I thought we had a good effort. We played really well in the third period. Most of the game, played a simple game. Didn’t have a lot of turnovers or anything like that. So I thought we had a good effort.”

Brian Elliott made 16 saves in the loss.

“He (Crosby) just kind of came around the corner. … Just made a good shot. Usually when you lose possession, you either have to make a big save or you have to have guys make a good play, and I didn’t come up with one there,” Elliott  said.
