Coyotes salvage OT win after blowing lead to Carolina

It’s just getting silly in the Pacific Division.  The Arizona Coyotes are no longer looking up at everyone in front of them in the standings.

The Coyotes are fifth place in the division and have a game or two in hand on most of the competition and just three points out of fist place.

Friday night wasn’t easy but Michael Grabner struck late in over time to give the Coyotes a 4-3 win after blowing a three-goal lead to the Carolina Hurricanes.

A quick outburst in the first period n goals from Brad Richardson, Brendan Perlini and Nick Cousins gave the Coyotes the 3-0 lead.

“They’re not all Oscar winners, it was ugly but we pulled it off,” said Richardson, who scored his third shorthanded goal of the season. “We definitely held on for dear life, got it to overtime and won it — and we’ll take it.”

Arizona improved to 7-5-0.

Antti Raanta made 48 saves in the win.

“The veteran guys really showed up tonight and ground one out,” Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet said.

Carolina rallied on goals from Jordan Martinook, Andrei Svechnikov and Jordan Staal. tie

“Their goalie made some incredible saves, but even then we kept going,” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said after the loss.

Petr Mrazek made 21 saves in the loss.

“You can roll down the excuses [for the bad start], a long trip yesterday, it was tough getting our legs going but, beyond that, we weren’t ready to go. To a man, everyone knew they had better. We started skating, moving the puck more north and south and started taking over the game,” Staal said after the loss.
