DETROIT, Mich – The Coyotes are young, hungry and aggressive and today they were defense-oriented. The result was a solid, dominating 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. The win also forced a game seven back in Glendale.
This match was actually over quickly as the younger Phoenix side took the game to the Red Wings early and built a 2-0 lead before Detroit was able to solve Ilya Bryzgalov. Brad Stuart got Detroit on the board after Lauri Korpikoski notched a short-handed goal in the first and Mathieu Schneider picked up a power play goal in the second.
Radim Vrbata added a power play tally after Sauter’s to increase the lead to 3-1.
Phoenix’s first three goals were off special teams effort. Their first of the series.
Wojtek Wolski added a marker before the end of the second to bury the older, slower Red Wings on this afternoon. For good measure, on the power play again, Taylor Pyatt made it 5-1, enabling Phoenix to make plans for game seven in Arizona.
Darren Helm added a so-what goal late in the third to make the final score 5-2.
Bryzgalov made 31 saves on the day while his opposite in the Detroit net, Jimmy Howard made 24 saves.
Phoenix will host game seven Tuesday night.
