Coyotes end skid win over Detroit after penalties

In Tempe, the Detroit Red Wings blew a two-goal lead in the third period, and lost to the Coyotes, 4-3, on penalties on Tuesday night.

“The frustration is there because the effort is there, the want and the will is there from the group,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “It’s just managing the game a little bit better.”

Connor Ingram made 37 saves in the Arizona win that ended a nine-game skid.

“We’ve had a lot of close ones along the way,” Ingram said. “We knew if we stuck with it we’d eventfully pull one out. So this feels good, there’s no doubt about it.”

The Coyotes moved to 14-25-5.

“We’re going to play a full 60 minutes no matter what’s going on,” Arizona forward Travis Boyd said. “It was a big win for everyone in here. I think we’ve been playing better than some of the results that we’ve been getting, so now maybe we can snowball this into a bit of a run.”

Detroit took a 1-0 lead on a second period power play goal from Dylan Larkin.

The Coyotes tied it, 1-1, just past the midway point of the middle frame.

In the third period, Detroit scored twice to grab a 3-1 lead.

Pius Suter and David Perron were the Red Wings’ strikers

“We probably got a little tired in the third, which is understandable with the back to back,” Lalonde said. “We ran into a really good goalie tonight. [We were] a little unfortunate with not being able to finish, but the way we played tonight and three goals on the road should be enough.”

Detroit dropped to 18-17-8.

“When it’s 3-1, we’ve got to bear down as a team. We talk about it all the time,” Red Wings defenseman Jake Walman said. “We can’t just do it for 40 minutes. We’ve got to do it the whole time. … We’re trying to be a great team, not a good team. We’ve got to finish those games.”

Arizona replied with two goals to send the game to extra time; Boyd and Dylan Guenther potted the markers.

“When you’re in that kind of a [losing] stretch, you know [a win] might not be a pretty one, it might not be a Picasso, but you need to find a way,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “I think we were able to find a way tonight.”

Nick Schmaltz was credited with the deciding goal in the skills competition.
