Coyotes drop 5-3 decision to Carolina

In Glandale, the Carolina Hurricanes got a much needed win on Monday night, 5-3, over the Coyotes.

The win pushed the Canes back into sole possession of first in the Metropolitan Division.

They are two points ahead of idle New York Rangers, who have a game in hand.

Antti Raanta made 23 saves in the Carolina win.

The Hurricanes moved to 49-20-8.

Nino Niederreiter and Max Domi had goals for the Canes.

“We needed that for sure,” Niederreiter said. “Overall, it’s good we got that win and got some juice from it.”

Nick Ritchie, Loui Eriksson and Alex Galchenyuk were the Arizona strikers.

“It’s tough for sure, you’re always trying to find a solution,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “The NHL is not an easy league … but we’ll keep pushing.”

The Coyotes dropped to 22-49-5.

“It’s obviously nice to get on the score sheet and produce a little bit, but that wasn’t my main focus,” Arizona’s Nathan Smith said. “I’m going out there to put my best foot forward and try to play the right way, try and learn and adapt.”

Karel Vejmelka made 46 saves in the Arizona loss.
