In Anaheim, the Ducks and Arizona Coyotes played rally hockey most of the night on
Friday. Neither team was able to shake the other, despite leads throughout the match.
Hampus Lindholm‘s second goal of the game tied the match for the Ducks, 5-5, to force extra time.
Clayton Keller scored his second of the game in the extra session to give the Coyotes a 6-5 win.
“I thought we stuck with it,” Keller said. “We had been playing some good hockey here the last couple games [but] things didn’t go our way. So tonight we just wanted to come out strong, keep playing the way we were.”
The win snapped a six-game slide by the Coyotes.
Trailing 3-4 in the third period, Arizona scored twice in 68 seconds to take a 5-4 lead off goals from Andrew Ladd and Phil Kessel.
“We got away from our game a little bit there, definitely gave them a little too many [Grade A] scoring chances,” Lindholm said. “We kind of got back to our game, but then we had a breakdown and they scored, and then we kind of went back to bad habits again. It was a roller coaster of a game.”
Scott Wedgewood made 32 saves in the Coyotes win.
“That’s a swing in the game,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “It could have hurt us a lot with that goal [if Comtois scored]. Another big save for [Wedgewood], and right away after we got our own breakaway, and [Keller] scored a big goal there. That was a huge swing in the game, no doubt about it.”
Arizona improved to 6-21-2.
Trevor Zegras had a goal and two points for the Ducks.
“I don’t care if you’re playing the first-place team or a team that struggles, you have to have discipline to stick with your game and not come off of it,” Anaheim head coach Dallas Eakins said. “It’s a great example, and a great reminder, that every team in this league is dangerous.”
The Ducks dropped to 17-9-6.
“We got away from our game a little bit there, definitely gave them a little too many [Grade A] scoring chances,” Lindholm said. “We kind of got back to our game, but then we had a breakdown and they scored, and then we kind of went back to bad habits again. It was a roller coaster of a game.”
After falling behind 0-1 on a goal from Arizona’s Travis Boyd, the Ducks replied with three goals by Lindholm, Kevin Shattenkirk and Derek Grant.
“The first 10 minutes of that game, it was not pretty,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “Anaheim was hard on us and we didn’t react well.”
Christian Fischer scored off the power play for the Coyotes.
Trevor Zegras also scored for the Ducks.
and John Gibson made 21 saves in the Anaheim loss.
