In Tempe, Barrett Hayton scored with 60 seconds left in extra time on Saturday to give the Coyotes a 5-4 win over the Anaheim Ducks.The win ended a nine-game skid for the Coyotes.
“It was a rough stretch for us,” Hayton said. “Obviously, it’s frustrating not winning, so it’s good to come back and find a way to win this.”
Arizona rallied with 35 seconds left on the game clock in the third period to tie it, 4-4, off a strike from Matias Maccelli .
“‘Celly’ putting that one in, it’s obviously a big goal,” Coyotes forward Christian Fischer said. “Obviously, we don’t want to go down with a minute or so left, that wasn’t part of our game plan, but what a great way to respond.”
Ivan Prosvetov made 25 saves in the Coyotes win.
“It’s always more fun to win,” Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. “We want to win. We want to finish on the right note. It’s fun after the game, everybody’s smiling, and you have a feeling of pride. We’re all professionals and we want to win every night.”
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza off a strike from Fischer at 12:12.crease.
“I thought we were controlling the play, but we kept turning the puck over. … You can’t keep giving them 2-on-1s, 3-on-1s, 4-on-1s,” Fischer said.
Adam Henrique scored the first of a double to knot the at 1-1 two minutes later.
The Ducks’ Cam Fowler iced for 38:55 in the match, a NHL record.
“Our guys, I’m really proud of how they continue to work, how they stick together, how they’re supporting each other,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. “This season is a tough one, but we’ll all be better for it.”
Arizona grabbed the lead back early in the middle frame on a marker from Lawson Crouse, and Clayton Keller scored at 9:06 for a 3-1 lead to the Coyotes.
Ryan Strome and Henrique then scored to tie the game, 3-3.
“He’s (Henrique) just been a great leader for us, even when times are tough this year, he’s been a real calming presence,” Strome said. “He brings the same attitude and work ethic day in and day out, and that’s really infectious for our young guys.”
Max Jones scored with just under two minutes left in regulation to give the Ducks a 4-3 lead.
Olle Eriksson Ek made 34 saves in the loss, the appearance was his NHL debut.
Eriksson Ek was on an emergency recall from the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League.
“I thought he settled in there really well,” Eakins said. “He should be proud of his performance. … To be the next man up is a tough situation sometimes. Your dream is always to play that first NHL game and then when it comes, you can be a little jittery.”
