Coyotes down Detroit in OT, 2-1

In Glendale, the Arizona Coyotes downed the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night, 2-1, in extra time.

Clayton Keller scored 25 seconds into the extra session for the win; the goal was reviewed.

“They all reviewed it and they felt differently, and I get it,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “It’s not a black and white rule. There’s always going to be some discretion. But in the end, we had a breakdown that led to that, and I’m more worried about the breakdown.”

Scott Wedgewood made 33 saves for the Arizona win.

“It was a tough night for me, I lost my grandfather to cancer, and I wouldn’t be here without him,” Keller said. “So it definitely was a special one.”

Detroit’s Dylan Larkin scored near the midway point of the opening frame for a 1-0 lead.

“I liked our swagger starting the season, we played hard and we played confident, but this road trip we haven’t been confident, and you saw that tonight,” Larkin said. “With a one-goal lead (in the third period), we’ve got to be a more confident hockey team.”

The Red Wings dropped to 8-9-3.

The Coyotes’ Ryan Dzingel hit for the tying goal at 13:31 of the third period to foce the game into the extra session.

“The group’s got some confidence right now, we’re getting some points and that’s huge for the group,” Wedgewood said.

Detroit went 0-3-1 on a four-game roadie.

“I think we consciously tried to be better defensively, we were better in some areas defensively, but you got to find a way to score that next goal and make it to 2-0 without giving anything up,” Blashill said. “We’ve got to find a way to sustain pressure without taking on needed risk.”

Arizona improved to 3-13-2.  They have gone 2-0-1 in their last three.

“We played hard, we stuck with it, we got pucks to the net and it was good to get one,” Keller said. “It’s a huge win for us.”

Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves in the Wings loss.

“I thought we had some good looks, we hit some posts, but we just didn’t capitalize,” Larkin said. “We’ve got to capitalize and close that one out.”
