Coyotes down Canucks, 4-3, in OT Canucks rally in third to force the extra session, salvage loser's point

If only the Arizona Coyotes had gone through two miserable stretches of the season. In Vancouver on Wednesday night, the Coyotes hung a 4-3 loss on the Canucks in extra time.

Logan Cooley scored at 3:51 of the extra session to give the Coyotes the win, scoring off a great pass from Dylan Guenther.

“When you have a chance to end the game like that, especially in overtime, you want to capitalize on that chance,” Cooley said. “If [Ingram] doesn’t make that save, we are not having this conversation, so props to him and props to ‘Gunner,’ too, for making a [heck] of a play and finding me.”

For the Canucks, it was loser;s point they very nearly lost as well. Vancouver trailed 3-1 before rallying to force the extra session.

“Obviously, good for us to push back, but I don’t think it’s really a team that’s better than us, so we probably shouldn’t be in that position,” the Canucks ‘Quinn Hughes said. “They were just opportunistic. I’d say we probably had more of the puck possession and looks.”

Connor Ingram made 23 saves. in the win.

The Coyotes moved to 34-40-5.

“We didn’t perform the way we wanted to [a 5-0 loss to the Kraken in Seattle],” Cooley said. “It just comes back to being resilient, sticking together, coming in against a Vancouver team like that and playing the way we did. It’s special.”

After a scoreless firt period, Josh Brown scored at 5:46 of the middle frame for a 1-0 lead to Arizona, scoring off a shot from the right circle.

The Canucks replied with a strike by J.T. Miller at 18:32, tying the match, 1-1. A shot from the point ticked off Miller’s skate and into the goal.

Vladislav Kolyachonok  iced for the Coyotes after recalled from the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League, he scored at 19:28 to put the Coyotes up, 2-1. He put a shot on goal from the point that clipped Vancouver’s Dakota Joshua  before finding the back of the net.

Guenther padded the lead at 1:55 of the third, scoring after a turnover caused by Cooley.

“Their [defensemen] are really good back there and they can make a lot of plays, so we want to limit their time and space as much as possible, and I thought we did that,” Cooley said. “I was fortunate to pickpocket that and found Guenther, and when he’s open in the slot like that, it’s going in.”

Vancouver dropped to 48-22-9.

“We showed that when we’re skating, they can’t really keep up with us,” Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy said. “Unfortunately, we waited until it was too late.”

The Canucks rallied back to save the loser’s point.

“We showed that when we’re skating, they can’t really keep up with us,” Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy said. “Unfortunately, we waited until it was too late.”

Conor Garland  closed the gap to 3-2 at 11:18, scoring from the left circle, near the bottom.

Elias Pettersson  forced extra time when he scored off the power play at 16:18, his shot from the right circle eluded Ingram.

“We made a push at the end,” Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. “ I don’t think we went to the net in the first two periods. Third period we had urgency.”

Arturs Silovs made 14 saves in the loss.

“Obviously, the way we played today wasn’t playoff hockey and wasn’t good enough,” Vancouver’s Elias Lindholm said. “And obviously we have three more games to put ourselves in a good spot and feel good about our game and get some confidence. We’re going to play some good teams, so it’s going to be a big stretch for us here.”
