Coyotes down Bruins, 4-3, in OT Schmaltz hits for winner in OT

In Tempe, Arizona’s Nick Schmaltz scored with 56 seconds left in extra time on Tuesday to give the Coyotes a 4-3 win over the visiting Boston Bruins.

The Coyotes snapped a three-game schneid.

“Our team had urgency, intensity, no quit, and our ‘care’ factor was high,” Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. “I’m extra proud of the guys.”

Arizona moved to 20-17-2.

“We pride ourselves on working hard and being a tough team to play against and give the same effort every night, and the last couple of games we got away from that, and the score was pretty lopsided,” Schmaltz said. “We wanted to come out and work hard, because everything cleans up when you work hard.”

Connor Ingram made 30 saves in the win.

David Pastrnak scored off the power play at 4:41 of the opening stanza to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

Clayton Keller tied i off the power play, 1-1, at 8:12 of the middle frame.

The Bruins reclaimed the lead, 2-1, midway through the second period on a marker from Jesper Boqvist.

The Coyotes tied it, 2-2, at 16:30 of the second on a strike by Dylan Guenther  after the Coyotes had shuffled their lines.

“I liked all of our lines. ‘Guentz’ played with a lot of energy, he’s so smart and he plays the game the right way,” Tourigny said.

Boston dropped to 24-8-8.

“We pride ourselves on being a good third period team, but you’ve got to bring it right from puck drop, especially against a team who can make you pay and plays quick,” the Bruins’ Charlie McAvoy said.

Arizona gained the lead, 3-2, with a goal from Matias Maccelli with 52 seconds  of fresh ice used in the third.

Jake DeBrusk forced the extra session when he tied the game, 3-3, 5:04 off a power play goal.

“Yeah, definitely feeling a little guilty, I had a couple of breakaways late in the game there, so definitely they will haunt me tonight when I sleep,” Pastrnak said of not scoring in extra time..

Jeremy Swayman faced one shot in the game, the game-winner.

Swayman entered the game in the extra session after starter Linus Ullmark left the ice at 2:40 of extra time with an apparent lower body injury.

“Obviously it’s hard for a goaltender to sit on the bench for three hours and then come in, it’s an unfortunate injury,” Pastrnak said.
