In St Louis, the Blues took the visiting Arizona Coyotes too lightly on Tuesday night.
The Coyotes’ Barrett Hayton hit for two goals and Arizona defeated the Blues, 3-2, for their second win of the season.
“It felt unreal,” Hayton said. “I love to score. I wanted to produce and help the team win.
“I’ve been focusing on the details in my game, playing a 200-foot game, being great in the (face-off) circle. Being able to get two goals feels real good.”
Scott Wedgewood made 34 saves in the Coyotes win.
“We played with a sense of urgency, we played with focus,” Coyotes head coach Andre Tourigny said. “The guys made a few adjustments and paid attention to detail.”
Arizona improved to 2-13-1.
“Barrett played a heavy game,” Tourigny said. “This is good for his confidence.”
St Louis has lost four straight.
Arizona’s Kyle Capobianco scored off the power play to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
The Blues dropped to 8-5-1.
Jordan Kyrou scored in the opening frame for the Blues to tie the game, 1-1.
“It’s been tough, there’s been some frustration,” Wedgewood said. “I hope I’ve given the guys a little bit of spark. This was a gutsy win.”
Torey Krug had a goal for the Blues to tie the again, 2-2.
“I thought at times we worked hard and we did the job,” Krug said. “I thought at times we just played stupid. There’s no secret formula. We’ve just got to go out there and stick to what makes us a good team and I think more often than not we’re going to beat the team that lines up across from us. It has nothing to do with the opponent. It’s all about what’s going on in the room.”
Hayton’s second goal of the game, came off the power play in the 14th minute of the third period for a 3-2 lead.
Jordan Binnington made 20 saves in the St Louis loss.
“Just try to do whatever I can to help the team,” Krug said. “‘O’Ry’ made a great play. It’s easy joining rushes like that when you know guys are going to see you and make that pass and all you have to do is focus on collecting it and putting it in. Great play by him.”
