Coyotes double-up Washington, 6-3

GLENDALE, Ariz – As the Capitals made their way into the desert they didn’t only have their eyes on adding two points to their resume but they also on the President’s Trophy.

The Coyotes have been eliminated from the playoffs and are now playing for pride while the Capitals are fine tuning their play heading full steam ahead into the playoffs. On Pat Tillman Military Appreciation Night here at Gila River Arena the Coyotes had something to prove coming out with a hot start in the first period.

With three, hard earned goals the Coyotes had stunned the Capitals and shutdown the wide range of talent they were bringing to the table.

The first goal was scored by Christian Dvorak using his silky mitts to squeak by  a couple defenders before sneaking it past Holtby for his 13thgoal of the season.

Two more goals were scored for the Coyotes by Josh Jooris for his fourth goal on the season and Alexander Burmistrov added one of his own for his second  and third of the night for the Coyotes.

Holtby was pulled right after the third goal and was replaced by Phillip Grubauer.

The Capitals knew they had to step up their game in order to compete with the feisty Coyotes.

At the end of the opening fame, he Coyotes were dominating the Capitals with a lead in shots and on the scoreboard.

At the start of the second period the Caps came out firing on all cylinders.

In the first few minutes, the Capitals drew a penalty to create a big offensive push which lead them to their first goal scored by Backstrom for his 23rd on the season.

Not long after, Winnek would bury a rebound for his 12th goal of the season to bring the Capitals within one.

From then on, the Coyotes scored two powerplay goals one by Dvorak for his second of the night and 14th of the season and another by Burmistrov for his third of the season and second of the night.

At the end of the middle frame, the Capitals had taken over in shots but the Coyotes were still running the table.

Alexander Burmistrov, during the second intermission, said, “We were scared and a bit intimidated coming into the game but if we keep playing how we are then we will come out on top”. They did just that throughout the rest of the game.

Going into the third there wasn’t a great deal of action but Peter Holland would add one more tally for the Coyotes midway through the period for his fifth goal of the season and then Justin Williams would add one just for pride at this point also midway through the period for his 22nd of the year.

Even though the Capitals almost doubled the Coyotes in shots they couldn’t seem to sneak to many past Domingue.

The game would end this way with the Coyotes stunning the Capitals in an offensive showing of 6-3.
