In Tempe, a neatly symmetrical evening ended with a 6-3 win for the Coyotes over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.
The Coyotes scored twice in each period, hitting for the first and second goals of each frame, bookended around an Avs’ goal in each period.
Connor Ingram made 28 saves in the Coyotes win.
Shayne Gostisbehere and Lawson Crouse scored i the first period for the Coyotes around a marker form the Avs’ Evan Rodriguez. for a 2-1 lead after the first.
“Right from the drop of puck it seemed like we were ready to go,” Crouse said. “It was obviously nice to get an early lead and then continue to get leads. It makes hockey a lot more fun and a lot easier, for sure.”
Arizona improved to 12-16-5.
Cale Makar and Mikko Rantanen scored in the second and third periods, respectively.
Nick Schmaltz scored off the power in the second period for a 3-1 lead to the Coyotes, and J.J. Moser scored at 16:38 for a 4-2 lead after Makar had scored.
Rantanen had a goal waved off for offsides, that came 32 seconds after the Makar goal.
“It was the turning point in the game,” Coyotes coach ANdre Tourigny said of the overturned goal. “If [they] make that call, it’s a 3-3 game. Take that goal back and we score, and it’s 4-2 and it changes everything.”
The Avs dropped to 19-12-2.
“We made a bunch of bad reads defensively that gave them scoring chances, and they did a nice job on attacking off the rush,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said.
Michael Carcone and Clayton Keller (empty net) scored in the third period for the Coyotes.
For Carcone, it was first NHL goal after being called up from the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League.
“It’s not a question of knowing if he has the talent, if he has a shot, if he has the skill, if he has the speed,” Tourigny said. “It’s a matter of if he can play a consistent 200-foot game. That’s what separates him from the NHL.”
Alexandar Georgiev made 27 saves in the Colorado loss.
“We were sloppy right away, just giving too much room and our checking game wasn’t in order right from the get-go,” Bednar said. “The urgency in our game didn’t pick up until the third period when it’s too late.”
