Coyotes defeat Chicago, 5-2

In Glendale, the Arizona Coyotes scored three times in the first period and then traded goals with the Chicago Blackhawks over the final two periods to earn a 5-2 win on Thursday night.

Clayton Keller scored twice in the win.

Darcy Kuemper made 28 saves to get the win.

 

Jonathan Toews and Dylan Strome were the Hawks’ scorers.

 

Vinnie Hinostroza assisted on all three first period goals for the Coyotes.

“We wanted to come here and have a great start, and that’s what we did,” Hinostroza said. “We wanted to pick up our home record. We really need to start going here at home.”

Michael Grabner, Brad Richardson and former Blackhawk Nick Schmaltz also scored for Arizona.

“First time playing the old team, and you get two wins in five days, that’s exciting,” Schmaltz said. “I was excited both games and I felt like I had a little extra something.”

Robin Lehner made 35 saves in the loss.

“We’ve giving up really easy chances and we’re having to work hard for ours, and it’s not a good combination,” Lehner said. “We’re giving up way too much, and it’s a hard climate to defend in right now for everyone.”
