Coyotes continue on their skid with loss in Edmonton

In Edmonton, Connor McDavid scored twice and had three points on the night in a 5-1 Oilers win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.

“It’s been a good start for our group, and when the team has success, individuals have success, and I think you’re seeing that throughout the lineup,” McDavid said.

Mikko Koskinen made 25 saves in the win.

“It’s early, there’s lots to work on, but I like some of the things we’re doing,” Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said. “Our special teams have been pretty good, we’ve gotten contributions throughout the lineup a little more than last year. We’re off to a decent start, but we’ve got a lot of work to do yet.”

Dysin Mayo was the lone striker for the Coyotes who are winless in four games.

“We worked really hard at it,” Arizona head coach Andre Tourigny said. “There’s a lot of good things we did in the game. It was more consistent, more structured. Now we need to find a way to score goals and do the little things that will make a difference.”

Zach Hyman scored twice, once off a shorthanded play, and on a power play.

“We’ve kind of come up together and kind of grown up together and going through this whole thing together, it’s fun,” McDavid said. “It’s special to be a part of that.”

Warren Foegele potted a single marker for the Oilers.

“[McDavid] is obviously a really special player and when you have a chance to play with him, you’re pretty fortunate because he creates so much space and time and he’s able to do a lot of things that nobody else can do,” Hyman said.

Karel Vejmelka made 26 saves in the loss.
