GLENDALE, Ariz – The Arizona Coyotes once again find themselves with a second pick in the first round in the NHL Entry Draft, thanks to some savvy maneuvering on the trade market. Picking in the bottom third of a relatively weak draft, there wouldn’t seem to be a whole lot to choose from. All the “blue chip” prospects are gone. Now the goal becomes trying to find the best of what’s left. The line separating one player from the
next becomes harder to define.
One possible choice is Jason Robertson; a 6’2″, 196 lb. Left Winger from the Kingston Frontenacs (OHL). He led his team in goals, assists, and points (42-39-81) last season and added 18 points in 11 playoff games.
The buzz on Robertson seems to be the lack of buzz. Despite his good size and great numbers, there doesn’t seem to be much interest. The fact that he’s still available at #23 when NHL Central Scouting has him rated at #14 would suggest that there may be other concerns. I think the Coyotes will pass on him as numerous other teams did.
Another possibility that may be available is Kole Lind; a 6’1″, 175 lb. Right Winger from the Kelowna Rockets. He is a bit on the skinny side, but could be a formidable player if he fills out his frame. He’s a pure goal scorer who is strong on his skates and strong with the puck. He is a skilled playmaker in addition to his scoring, and plays with grit. He could be a Tippett-style player if he beefs up.
Another interesting prospect is Conor Timmins, a 6’2″, 184 lb. Defenseman from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL). He led the Greyhounds with 54 assists last season, then added 8 points in 11 playoff games.
Timmins wasn’t highly regarded going into this past season, but made great strides this season. He began as a mid-range Defenseman for the Greyhounds but worked his way up to being their #1. He is a great puck-mover, quarterbacking the Hounds’ power play. He scored 61 points in 67 games, which would make him a good fit for the Coyotes, who are always looking for good defenders. He could stand to add a little beef to his frame, but isn’t afraid to get physical even with his current size. He has a solid all-around game and could be the sleeper pick of this draft class.
“With the 23rd overall pick, the Arizona Coyotes select Defenseman Conor Timmins from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.”
