PHOENIX – As the draft continues and names continue to drop off the board, teams start to look past simply drafting the most highly-skilled player available and look more towards filling organizational needs. The Arizona Coyotes can be expected to address their lack of depth on defense with their second pick in the first round.
One quality they seem to lack on defense is size, and there’s one prospect in the draft pool that has it in spades…Logan Stanley, a 6’7″, 225 lb defenseman from the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires.
There’s an old adage among scouts that you can’t teach size. That adage was invented for guys like Logan Stanley. He has the kind of size that GMs dream about. Many teams will draft a guy that big in the hope that they can teach him how to play defense. Stanley has that kind of size and loves to use it to his advantage. And at only 18, he can be expected to fill out that huge frame even more as he matures.
Listed atop his skills list is reach (obviously), but next on the list is strong defensive positioning. He is often called a two-way defenseman, though his offensive game still needs some work. He is also good under pressure and adept at making the first pass out of his own zone. He is very hard to play against in his own end, and that is something the Coyotes have been missing for quite some time.
He could be the big banger the Coyotes have been looking for.
“With the 20th overall pick, the Arizona Coyotes select, from the Windsor Spitfires, Logan Stanley.”
