Costello hits milestone in Americans win

WICHITA, KS – The Allen Americans defeated the Wichita Thunder on Sunday afternoon at Intrust Bank Arena by a score of 4-2 to wrap up the regular season. Allen finished the season with a record of 49-17-4-2.

The Americans scored twice in the opening frame with Tyler Barnes netting his 11th and Josh Brittain his 11th. Neither team had a power play opportunity in the opening period, but Allen despite being outshot 14 to 11 took a 2-0 lead to the locker room.

Wichita erased the 2-0 Allen lead in the second period with two goals of their own. Zach O’Brien got the Thunder on the board with his 9th of the season, poking home a rebound in front of the net. Then Blake Tatchell netted his 13th from the right corner to even the score at 2-2. Jamie Murray came in to start the second period in place of starter Riley Gill and faced 18 shots, stopping 16.

The Americans scored twice in the final frame including the game winner from Spencer Asuchak, his 26th of the season from Greger Hanson and Chad Costello. The point by Costello was his 700th career point and he finishes the season as the ECHL scoring champion with 122 points.

The Americans will hold a Playoff Pep Rally on Tuesday night at sponsor Dodies Cajun Bar & Grill located across from the Allen Event Center. The rally will run from 6:00  to 7:30 p.m. with all players and Head Coach Steve Martinson in attendance.

The Americans open the postseason at home next Wednesday night against the Utah Grizzlies.
