The Detroit Red Wings have played stellar hockey over the past two games, a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins over the weekend, and a 1-0 shutout of the Montreal Canadiens Monday night.
Jared Coreau made 18 saves for his second shutout.
“Those are two big wins,” Detroit’s Frans Nielsen said. “I thought we played pretty good on our road trip, and now we’ve come home and kept it going.
“It’s good to see we can win games both like the Pittsburgh game and this one.”
Thomas Vanek scored the only goal of the game to give the Wings the win.
“We know we are capable of putting together wins if we play like this,” Vanek said. “We have to get better, but when we stay patient, we can win against anyone.”
Carey Price made 19 saves to take the loss in a game that featured tight defense that smothered most offensive pushes on the night.
“I wish we could have generated more offensive chances, but they did a very good job of stopping us in the neutral zone,” Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. “We played well defensively, and Carey was very good, but we didn’t get any puck luck.”
Vanek’s goal came off a deflection of a shot from the blue line by Danny DeKeyser.
“He’s got an unbelievable offensive mind,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said after the game when discussing Vanek. . “He had the tip that got behind Price and probably should have gone in, and then he gets the goal. He’s been a really good fit for us.”

For Coreau, it was his second career NHL shutout.
“I’m just trying to be calm and stay sound technically,” Coreau said. “I’m going to enjoy this, but I can’t get too high, because a shutout is definitely a team effort.”
