Connor, Jets edge Kings in OT, 2-1

The Winnipeg Jets don’t really mind if you turn your attention elsewhere to more glamorous franchises.

That’s just fine.

Tuesday night, while involved in a tight game with the visiting Los Angeles Kings, the Jets went about their game plan and used two goals from Kyle Connor to defeat the Kings, 2-1, in overtime.

Connor picked up the game-winner at 1:37 of the extra session.

“We were trying to get some crossing done in the [offensive] zone and I think I lost my man a bit,” Connor said of the game-winner. “Once I got it, I just tried to get it off quick. I found that hole right there.”

Eric Comrie made 16 saves for his first win of the campaign for the Jets.

Winnipeg improved to 44-19-10 to set a franchise record for wins.

“Everything goes under the radar when you play for Winnipeg. He’s (Connor) been one of the huge X-factors for our team,” the Jets’ Blake Wheeler said. “Him stepping into our lineup and contributing at the rate he’s contributed at, it’s a huge reason why we sit where we are today. He was a guy that you had high hopes for coming into the year, but obviously a little bit of a question mark. You didn’t really know what you were going to get. He’s taken the opportunity that he’s got this year and done a great job.”

Dustin Brown gave the Kings a 1-0 lead in the second period before Connor tied it in the same frame.

“It was a very hard-fought game,” LA’s Anze Kopitar said. “They’re a very good home team, so we know coming in it was going to be tough and it was. I thought we played pretty well. There’s obviously still room in a bunch of areas we can improve on and play better, but at the end of the day, we’ll take the point.

“It’s a tough back-to-back, and three out of the four points in two nights, it’s not bad. We’ll take it.”

The Kings dropped to 40-27-7.

Jack Campbell made 36 saves in taking the loss.

“I think we got three out of four points against two tough opponents, which is a really positive thing. But I think we want to be honest with ourselves and know we can play better. I thought our goalie gave us a chance tonight. I thought our defense played really hard, and I thought our veteran leaders were a big reason we got a point,” Kings head coach John Stevens said after the loss and in Winnipeg and the win over the Minnesota Wild in overtime Monday.
