In Newark, the New Jersey Devils gave up a late third period goal to Boone Jenner  of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday afternoon, the goal tied the game, 3-3, and forced extra time.
“I was just coming off the bench and kind of saw that play developing,” Jenner said. “I saw the puck in the air and tried to bat it down. It kind of went a little bit ahead of me and I tried just to get it on net as quick as I could … maybe try to trick the goalie, and happy it went by him.”
The overtime settled nothing. Jacob Voracek scored the only goal in the skills competition to give Columbus a 4-3 win.
“It was a gutsy win,” Columbus head coach Brad Larsen said. “It was nothing pretty, that’s for sure, but there are no pretty points out there.”
Joonas Korpisalo made 36 saves for Columbus in the win.
“I didn’t (have a book on the shooters),” Korpisalo said. “I just go with the instincts. Obviously you want to win, but I didn’t think too much. Just go out there and play and do my best.”
New Jersey’s Dawson Mercer and Dougie Hamilton scored 77 seconds apart in the middle frame.
“We have all the talent, we have to just execute better,” Hamilton said. “We just got to get more comfortable with each other. So, obviously (it’s) disappointing we didn’t get one in at the end.”
New Jersey dropped to 4-2-1.
Andreas Johnsson gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead in the opening frame.
The Jackets’ Oliver Bjorkstrand‘s power-play goal just p[ast the midway point of the first period, tied the game, 1-1.
“We were fighting it, the game got away from us and we didn’t have much going and Boone comes through with a big goal,” Larsen said. “Then the penalty kill was massive. Those guys just battled their tails off to get us to overtime. It was obviously a huge moment, and love to see your captain (Jenner) lead the charge.”
Columbus improved to 5-3-0.
Patrik Laine also scored for the Blue Jackets.
Scott Wedgewood made 23 saves for New Jersey in the loss.
