The Columbus River Dragons had an eventful season last year by going into the Ignite Championship versus the Watertown Wolves. The series was tied up 1-1 with it being the best of three series. The final game was tough and thrilling as it ends up in Overtime. Unfortunately, the Watertown Wolves would come out victorious.
Moving into the off-season, the Federal Prospects Hockey League added three additional teams which caused a lot of chaos amongst the current rosters. The Dragons appeared to be getting rid of their whole squad that had taken them to the championship the year prior. The fans were worried as there whole only a handful of people that were returning from the previous season.
The first game of the season was an exhibition friendly match between the new Mississippi Sea Wolves and the Columbus River Dragons. The Dragons were a mess through the game with no communication, no clicking between players, and no sign of going to be a competitive team in the two-division league.
The next two games were against another new team, Elmira Mammoths, and the Dragons seemed to be clicking. Both of those performances were dominated by the Dragons both in size, speed, passing, shooting, and scoring.
The third game of the season the Dragons would travel to Biloxi to try their luck again against the Mississippi Sea Wolves. The Dragons were not able to compete with the new team and ended up getting shutout.
That game must have triggered the coach and the players to never have a performance like that again. The Dragons would start communicating and clicking on the ice. The next three matches with the Sea Wolves would see the Dragons outscoring them 26-11.
The momentum wouldn’t stop there as the Dragons would face the defending championship team and dominate their two game matches of 8-2 with one of the games being a shutout. The Dragons would face Port Huron and Mississippi the next few matches which would increase the winning streak to ten wins since that embarrassing shutout versus the Sea Wolves.
The next match had many people paying attention throughout the league for several different reasons. It was the Danbury Hat Tricks versus the Columbus River Dragons. Both teams are number one in their respective division, and both seemed to be unstoppable. The other reason fans were tuned in for the two matches that weekend was because of Daniel Amesbury and Justin Schmit. Both individuals are current Ice Wars champions and on the same ice at the same time.
The first match between the Hat Tricks and the Dragons went into overtime which ended up with the Hat Tricks breaking the ten-win game streak the Dragons were on at the time. The next night was a different story both on the ice and in the books. The Dragons had shutout the number two team in the league 5-0.
The Dragons would travel up to Port Huron for the next set of matches which went one and one for the Dragons and the Prowlers. Over the next seven matches, the Dragons would be on a seven-win streak with one more overtime match and two shutout wins.
The next test is for the Dragons to battle on the ice against the only other new team to the league, the Motor City Rockers. The issue for the Dragons is that no one really knows anything about the team, the organization, the playing, or the coaching. The only information is that they are third in the same division as the Dragons with a 14-7 record prior to traveling to Columbus.
The Dragons are current division leaders in the Continental Division with a record of 22-2-1 and with 65 points which is 18 points higher than Port Huron who is in second place.
