Columbus rally from early deficit to beat Blues, 7-4

The Columbus Blue Jackets needed a game where their offense broke out of its doldrums.

They got their opportunity Thursday night when they faced the Blues in St Louis and came away with a 7-4 win.

Boone Jenner and Anthony Duclair did the heavy lifting for the Jackets with two goals apiece in the victory.

“I think all of the opportunities that we missed the past couple of games started going in for us and we were very opportunistic tonight,” Duclair said. “We had a rough start, but at the same time the two quick goals to start the second really gave us momentum all of the way through.”

Joonas Korpisalo made 33 saves as the Blue Jackets improved to 5-4-0.

Zach Sanford, Jaden Schwartz, Alexander Steen, and  Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Blues who had a 2-0 lead early in the game.

“It [stinks],” Tarasenko said. “If I had more English words I would explain this, but not much. It feels [bad] to be doing this in front of our fans. This is not the most fun time in our life and in my life personally. I don’t know if you can [stink] more and then you get out of it. … I just want to say sorry for our fans who support us. I feel [bad] now after games like this.”

The Blues dropped to 2-4-3 and are 1-3-2 in their last six games.

“We know we need to be better; I’m tired of having these conversations,” Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo said. “We just need to be better.

“We’re just not good in our small aspects of our game. We’re giving up odd-man rushes, we’re giving up chances which are just uncharacteristic of this group. … I’m tired of leaving our goalies out to dry.”

Josh Anderson, Seth Jones and David Savard also scored for Columbus.

“We know they were a hungry team coming into tonight and we were too. We wanted a response. They’re a good team over there,” Jenner said.

Jake Allen got the start for St Louis but was given the hook after making just 17 saves and yielding four goals; Chad Johnson finished up the game.

“It’s frustrating, for sure. I don’t know what to say. It’s not good enough, obviously. We’re going to get back to work tomorrow. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves,” the Blues Alexander Steen said after the loss.
