BOISE, Idaho – Colorado scored one goal in each of the three periods and were cruising along to a comfortable 3-0 win in game 3 of the Mountain Division finals when the Steelheads were gifted with a Power Play opportunity.
Idaho Forward Steven McParland said, “Here hold my beer!” and swatted the puck into Eagles Goalie Joe Cannata’s net for a breakthrough goal at 7:02 of the third period to bring the Steelheads to within two.
Not to be outdone his teammate, Cole Ully, taking advantage of the extra attacker with Phillipe Desrosiers out of the net, slid one by Colorado’s Cannata who had to stand on his head much of the third period but managed to hang on for the 3 to 2 win.
The league’s leading goal scorer in the regular season, Eagles Forward Michael Joly, put up the first score of the game with one of his brilliant stick handles across the slot and sliding the puck past Desrosiers on the way by at the 16:38 mark of the first period.
J.C. Beaudin added to his playoff goal-scoring lead with numbers 7 and 8. In period two Julien Nantel set him up with a great pass that resulted in a 2-0 Eagles lead that held up into the final frame when another J.C. Beaudin goal, this one an unassisted breakaway, beating Desrosier at 1:35 into period three.
Despite being outshot 37 to 20 and killing 5 penalties to Idaho’s 3, Colorado managed to preserve the win with great goaltending and timely defense after some very opportunistic early scoring.
