Clan book spot in next stage of Cup, Stars eliminated

Glasgow Clan booked themselves a spot in at least the Elimination Game of the Challenge Cup with a two-goal win over Dundee Stars on Tayside.

The result temporarily puts the Clan top of Group B, and they will now be relying on the Stars beating Belfast Giants on Sunday to stay there.

Glasgow opened the scoring early, as Rob Lachowicz redirected Darien Kielb’s shot from the point past Jarrett Fiske at 01:34 to make it 1-0.

Kielb made it 2-0 less just over two minutes later at 03:37, picking the puck up at the blue line and finding some space in the high slot to fire a shot past Fiske.

Matt Berry had the best chance for the Stars, however was denied on a partial breakaway by Sami Aittokallio as the score remained 2-0 heading into the first intermission.

A high-sticking call against Griffin Luce proved costly, as Jason Fram extended Glasgow’s lead to 3-0 on the powerplay, blasting a slapshot past Fiske at 36:13. Matt Berry pulled a goal back late in the period, making it 3-1 at 39:38 with a wrist shot in close over the glove of Aittokallio.

Keanu Yamamoto made it a one goal game at 45:23, sending a tight angle shot above Aittikallio. The Stars were then on top and could have tied the game but for a puck going just past the post on a couple of occasions.

Despite the momentum shifting in Dundee’s favour throughout the third period, Tristin Langan emerged on a two-on-one breakaway late and made no mistake, beating Fiske in close at 57:47 to seal the win for his side to the delight of the sizable travelling support.
