In Chicago, the visiting Seattle Kraken could not deal with the luxury of a two-goal lead in the first period, and lost to the Blackhawks, 5-4, in A Sunday matinee.
Chicago tied the game in the third period off a goal from Tyler Johnson, just past the midway point of the period.
Less than a minute later, Jason Dickinson put the Hawks ahead, 5-4.
“Definitely impressive,” Chicago coach Luke Richardson said. “As the game went along, we played better, and when it really counted at the end, we played hard, and they played for each other. They’re really becoming a group in there and it’s nice to see. But, just mentioned to them after the game that we dodged a bullet for sure.”
It was another blown 2-0 lead for a team in the NHL this season.
Alex Stalock made 30 saves for the Ch
icago win.
Jared McCann and Andre Burakovsky scored in the first period for the 2-0 advantage for Seattle.
“Disappointing loss,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “We did a lot of things that will end up getting you beat on the road. You can look at face-offs, specialty teams early, including a short-handed goal early that really feeds them and gives them life in this hockey game. Down to most importantly, just the way we checked and played without the puck in the last 40-45 minutes of this hockey game.”
Jujhar Khaira got Chicago on the board with a shorthanded marker, the Blackhawks fourth of the season, to make it 2-1.
“I think we’re buying into the system, and everybody takes pride in that part of our game, the special teams for sure,” said Khaira. “Right now, we’re fortunate enough to get those bounces but I think we’ve been really good on the kill so far.”
Johnson scored his first of the game with less than a minute to go in the first for a 2-2 tie. The goal came off the power play.
“Well, I just think it’s the compete [level] on the team,” Johnson said. “I think everyone in here just keeps working hard regardless of the score. It’s what we’ve talked about from Day One. It’s just playing our game doing what we need to do, control what we can control and just keep going.”
Chicago’s Max Domi put them ahead, 3-2, in the middle frame.
“Well, I just think it’s the compete [level] on the team,” Johnson said. “I think everyone in here just keeps working hard regardless of the score. It’s what we’ve talked about from Day One. It’s just playing our game doing what we need to do, control what we can control and just keep going.”
Matty Beniers and Vince Dunn scored for Seattle to give them a 4-3 lead in the second.
“We have to stay on the gas,” McCann said. “That’s an easy way to put it. We let off, and they’ve got players who can make plays. We can’t let up. I thought we had a good start. We took it to them in the first 20 [minutes]. We just got comfortable, kind of got complacent, and we can’t do that.”
Martin Jones made 22 saves in the Seattle loss.
