Chicago hand Rangers 5-2 defeat

In New York Wednesday night, the Chicago Blackhawks dulled the aura around the Winter Classic win the Rangers were lounging in.

With a three-goal third period, the Blackhawks delivered a cold slap in the face to the Rangers in a 5-2 win.

Patrick Sharp struck early in the third period to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead after both clubs traded goals in the opening 40 minutes.

“Contributing offensively is to be expected from every line,” Sharp said. “We’re more than capable of doing it but more than anything, I thought we played real stingy tonight and didn’t give up a whole lot, so that was one of the keys tonight.”

Jeff Glass made 23 saves to pick up the win and really was rarely tested through the first two periods.

“Pretty special feeling obviously playing against one of the better goaltenders in the world,” Glass said on his first NHL game at MSG. “It was a long road trip for our team, so we are happy to get a couple of points. … My job was to come up with some timely saves tonight. I got a lot of run support, and that’s important.”

The Rangers reverted to previous years forms by aiming for the crest on the jersey of the goalie.

Vinnie Hinostroza, Nick Schmaltz, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane also scored for Chicago.

Nick Holden and Mika Zibanejad had the Rangers strikes as they tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2 before going limp in the final frame.

“You have to give credit to Chicago; they played a good game, but at the end of the day our execution … we fed their transition,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. “They’ve got too much speed and too much skill to give them the looks that we gave them. We got what we deserved.”

Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves in the loss.

“For some reason, it was hard for us to get going,” Lundqvist said. “We need points right now, so we have to dig deep here and try to get two wins before the (five-day mandatory) break. But tonight, I felt like they were definitely the better team.”
