In Chicago, Dylan Strome scored his first goal of the season to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead in the third period on Friday.
Chicago protected the lead for the win over the Arizona Coyotes.
The Hawks have won three straight.
“Yeah, just a good feeling,” Strome said. “Been awhile since I scored a goal, especially at home, with the crowd, so it felt great. [I] kind of shot it right at him and it squeaked through there. ‘Kaner’ made a great pass. I’ll take that one for sure. Felt great.”
Chicago killed off a 6-on-4 disadvantage for the final 86 seconds of the game. The Hawks were called for too many men on the ice and the Coyotes had pulled the goalie for the extra attacker.
“Well, it’s huge,” Chicago head coach Derek King said. “When I first got here, you could just see how fragile they were. They’re enjoying it. It’s not pretty sometimes, but that’s the game. They’re battling for each other, they’re playing hard, they’re trying. We’re getting some great goaltending and we’re just finding ways to win.”
Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves in the Hawks win.
Andrew Ladd scored the Coyotes lone goal.
“‘Ladder’ made a great play on that,” Arizona’s Kyle Capobianco said. “I really didn’t do much on that. He made a [heck] of a great shot.”
Chicago improved to 4-9-2.
Alex DeBrincat also hit for a goal in the Blackhawks win.
Arizona dropped to 1-12-1.
Scott Wedgewood made 27 saves in the Arizona loss.
“He was rock solid,” Coyotes head coach Andre Tourigny said. “He kept us there. I think we had too many breakdowns, a few breakaways. ‘Wedgy’ is really good.”
