Chicago devoted to win over Red Wings

In Chicago, the Blackhawks used an opportunity to match up with the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday afternoon to post a big 6-2 win.

Pius Suter picked up a hat trick, including the first two goals of the game to lead the way.

“I was pumped up, I was excited,” Suter said. “When you have two (goals), you know what the next one is going to mean. Just kind of happy it worked out.”

Chicago improved to 2-3-1; the Red Wings dropped to 2-4-0.

Kevin Lankinen made 25 saves for the win.

Tyler Bertuzzi struck twice on the power-play goal for Detroit.

“No. 1, we didn’t do a good enough job of putting pucks in behind people and being on the same page,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “No. 2, I thought tonight, for sure, we were loose defensively. … We’re going to have to be a team that does it way better in terms of defending. We can’t give up lots of chances. We’re not going to necessarily expect to score easy, so we have to be a team that defends way better than we did tonight.”

Connor Murphy and Mattias Janmark popped in single markers for the Blackhawks.

“We played well for a lot of the game,” Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “Second period, we got a bit up and down, bit scrambly with our puck plays, but the Murphy goal was big for us to go in with a little more breathing room. But overall, the start, the third period [were] very solid, professional approach and we were rewarded for it.”

Philipp Kurashev added a late goal at 15:55 of the third period to complete the scoring.

Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves in the loss.

“Our power play needed to be way better,” Bertuzzi said. “That’s going to win us some games down the stretch. If we can get that going, we’ll win a lot more games. It was good to get those two power-play goals.”
