ABBOTSFORD, BC – Charlotte recorded a runaway win over Abbotsford on the road. This was the Checkers third straight win, the five goals they scored means they have put the puck in the net 15 times in the last three games.
In less than four minutes of the first period, Charlotte went ahead through Riley Nash, the goal coming on a power play situation. Abbotsford have the best penalty kill percentage in the AHL that did not stop Nash from deflecting a shot from Sanguinetti into the Heat’s goal.
The second period and Charlotte really started to flex their muscles with Nicolas Blanchard and Justin Krueger getting on the score sheet. Blanchard scored with a wrist shot from the slot, Krueger jumped on a poor clearance making the Heat pay for sloppy defensive work. The goal was Krueger’s first in the AHL and now means that every regular player on the Checkers has scored this season.
Abbotsford, goalie Danny Taylor had to pick the puck out of the net on two more occasions in the third period. Bobby Sanguinetti beat him with a wrist shot that went over the goalies shoulder then Drayson Bowman scored from a rebound, both goals coming from power plays.
In his second start of the season, John Muse made 26 saves and recorded Charlotte’s first shutout in the 5-0 win. Chris Terry proved to be Charlotte’s top scorer for the night with 4 assists, a career high.
Charlotte has a rematch with Abbotsford Saturday evening before traveling to Norfolk to face the Admirals on Tuesday evening.
