CHARLOTTE, MC – A controversial goal by Lake Erie’s Cameron Gaunce with under two minutes to play in overtime gave the Monsters a 2-1 victory. Gaunce had collided with Charlotte’s goalie Justin Peters after taking his shot. Peters protested, but the officials gave the goal, ruling that the puck had crossed the goal line before the collision.
Everything was not all gloom and doom for the Checkers as they have earned a total of six points from the last seven games. Another plus was the return of Justin Peters, in the Checkers goal after spending several weeks with the Carolina Hurricanes, he made 24 saves.
In the second period Chris Terry scored for Charlotte then six minutes later Greg Mauldin tied the game for the Monsters. The Checkers had two excellent opportunities to win the game; unfortunately Zach Boychuk’s efforts were stopped by Monster’s goalie Cedrick Desjardins who had 34 saves to his credit.
Charlotte now return home to the Time Warner Cable Arena for a six game home stand beginning with a visit from the Chicago Wolves Saturday March 19 at 7pm
