Checkers defeat AHL’s #1 team on the road

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla – Charlotte appears to have the measure of Oklahoma City Barons with a season record of 4-1-1 against AHL’s top team. Twenty five percent of the Barons losses on the season have been to the Checkers, Oklahoma are now 30-12-5.

A.J.Jenks, recently traded from the Florida Panthers organization put Charlotte on the score board at the end of the first period. This was Jenk’s first point in 31 games this season and the first goal since March of 2011 when he was playing for the Rochester Americans.

In the second period a Matt Pistilli shot rebounded to Brett Sutter, Charlotte’s captain duly put the puck away to make the score 2-0 Checkers. The Barons then came back with Curtis Hamilton scoring after the puck took an odd bounce off the glass.

The third period has not been a happy hunting ground for Charlotte especially in the last two games when they lost the lead and the game. This evening things were different, Bobby Sanguinetti reached 13 points this season, 5 goals and 8 assists when he beat the Barons goalie David LeNeveu to score Charlotte’s third goal.

Charlotte kept the pressure on Oklahoma in the third period with Brett Sutter having a goal disallowed and Jenks hitting the post. Jerome Samson, brought out a great save from Baron’s goalie David LeNeveu. Injury and a reassignment from NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes has kept Samson off the ice for the Checkers.

John Muse in the Charlotte goal made 27 saves and is 6-1-0 this season. During the last five minutes of the game in a four-on-four situation, Muse made several important saves to keep Charlotte ahead.

Saturday evening Charlotte visit the Texas Stars, this is part of a seven game road trip through the month of February. Charlotte’s next home game is on February 12 against Norfolk Admirals at Time Warner cable Arena.
