Charlotte ends Hershey’s run at history

HERSHEY, Pa – The Charlotte Checkers did what no other AHL team has done since 2009; that is win a playoff series over the Hershey Bears. The Checkers won Game Six in Hershey 2-1 in overtime and ended Hershey’s hopes of making history. The Checkers got on the board 35 seconds into the game when Brett Sutter pounced on a rebound from a Zac Delpe shot that went to the right of Braden Holtby and slammed home the puck for an early 1-0 lead.
The Bears finally tied the game when off a face-off to the right of Charlotte goaltender, Mike Murphy, Keith Aucoin won the face-off back to Brian Fahey whose shot from the point fooled the goaltender and went into the net to tie the game at 1-1.

However, it didn’t take long for the Checkers to end Hershey’s run at history. Nick Dodge went behind the Bears goal line and flipped the puck in front of the Bears net where left winger Nicolas Blanchard was skating in front. Blanchard backhanded the pass over Holtby’s shoulder 1:30 into overtime to end the game and Hershey’s hopes of a three-peat.

Charlotte outshot Hershey 30-27 and both teams were shutout on eight power play chances, six for Charlotte and two for Hershey.

The Checkers will now take on the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins who finished off the Norfolk Admirals in six games. The series is expected to begin on Thursday in Wilkes-Barre Scranton.
