CHARLOTTE, NC – A good weekend on the road for the Checkers, they took five of a possible six points (2-0-1) and moved back to first place in the American Hockey League standings with a record of 11-3-2.
In the shootout, Justin Peters in the Charlotte goal kept a clean sheet. In regulation and overtime he made 33 saves giving him five wins in five starts. It was Chris Terry, the all-time leading shootout specialist with 11 goals, who broke the deadlock for the Checkers giving them a 4-3 victory over the Rampage. Charlotte have struggled in shootouts in the past, this was the team’s second win in the last eight tries going back to last season. This season they had only scored twice out of 18 attempts.
Eight minutes into the first period and Greg Rallo put the Rampage a head. The lead lasted seven minutes before Checkers captain Brett Sutter tied the game. Before the buzzer to end the first period James Wright gave San Antonio the lead again, 2-1.
A few seconds into the second period Bobby Sangunetti hit a shot that bounced off the post into the Rampage goal to tie the game once again. Halfway through the period Scott Timmins restored the lead for the Rampage. Early in the third period Zach Boychuk scored his 10 goal of the season to tie the game up yet again. Justin Peters came up big in overtime making some excellent saves.
Charlotte now travel to Norfolk for the game on Wednesday evening. The next road trip after this week is December 16th in San Antonio until then Charlotte has 10 home games.
