PAPILLION, NEBRASKA – The CCHA recently enjoyed their final week of conference play before teams will take a break from conference play followed by a week off over the Christmas Holiday. A handful of teams will play non-conference opponents while a handful of others will play in tournaments.
Nebraska-Omaha at Alaska
Fairbanks, Alaska – The Nanooks split their meeting with the Mavericks this weekend after losing the lead in the third period Saturday night. On Friday night, Alaska defeated Nebraska-Omaha 4-3 to end their four game winless streak. Alaska goalie Scott Greenham stopped 31 pucks for the win. Bowling Green, Ohio – The Spartans continued their hot play against the Falcons sweeping Bowling Green. Led by forward Corey Tropp, Michigan State managed to win in overtime Friday evening and behind Tropp’s hat trick, win in stellar fashion Saturday night. The Spartans raised their season record with the two wins to 12-6-2.
Northern Michigan at Lake Superior State
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – The Lakers were not very kind host to their “Yupper” neighbors this Holiday season as they would send the Wildcats home empty handed. Rick Schofield scored twice for Lake Superior who routed Northern Michigan 5-1. Brian Mahoney-Wilson lost his shutout bid at 19:02 in the third period when the Wildcats Phil Fox scored the lone goal for Northern Michigan. Saturday evenings game say Lake Superior extend it winning streak to four and a series sweep as they would defeat the Wildcats 6-3. Lake Superior would hold the edge all evening in the sea saw battle before beginning to put the game away in the final moments with two empty net goals from Fred Cassiani and Dillin Stonehouse.
Miami at Ohio State
Columbus, Oho – The top ranked RedHawks entered play Friday evening looking to close out the first part of the season on a great note. After Cody Reichard stopped a mere 17 saves for the shutout, Miami had Ohio State with their backs to the wall. Saturday offered a little more Buckeye offense as Ohio State would score twice in the second period. However, Miami had other plans and would score four unanswered goals in the third period as Andy Miele would score twice.
Ferris State at Western Michigan
Kalamazoo, Michigan – The Ferris State Bulldogs are slowly building to a big eruption. This week’s victim was the helpless Western Michigan Broncos. With a two game sweep, Ferris State rose to third in the conference while Western Michigan fell even lower into the depths. The Bulldogs were led by Pat Nagle on Friday night who stopped 22 shots for the shutout victory. On Saturday Todd Pococke scored two goals and Zach Redmond had three points for the Bulldogs who held off a late charge by the Broncos for the sweep.
Notre Dame at Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan – In a battle of two number one seeds from last year’s tournament, both teams walked away with highs and lows. While both schools are hovering around .500 this season and have yet to put much together, they also have not allowed themselves to slip below the standard either. Michigan would win in dominating fashion Friday night with a 4-1 victory. Michigan’s Brian Hogan made 23 saves for the win to defeat the injury plagued Irish. On Saturday night, Notre Dame would gain the upper hand in a 2-0 win. Notre Dame was led by freshman goaltender Mike Johnson who would make 38 saves for his fifth win of the season and his second shut out.
