Montgomery hired as Blues coach, replaces Bannister

Jim Montgomery was hired as coach of the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.

The 55-year-old replaces Drew Bannister, who was fired. Montgomery signed a five-year contract with the Blues just five days after he was fired as Boston Bruins coach.

He will debut as Blues coach at the New York Rangers on Monday (7 p.m. ET; FDSNMW, MSG).

“Crazy. Crazy. There’s no other word for it,” Mongomery said. “A lot of emotions. I’m a firm believer when one door closes, another one opens if you do the right thing. And it’s about your relationships in life. At the end of the day, when we’re all done and retired and we’re not fortunate enough and privileged enough to be in NHL buildings again, it’s the relatinoships you have in your life.”

“This was more an opportunity to get someone of Jim’s caliber more than anything else,” Blues president of hockey operations and general manager Doug Armstrong said. “We’ve had to deal with our situations off the ice with injuries and everyone deals with that, but this decision was based, I would say, 100 percent on having someone of Jim’s caliber becoming available when I didn’t know that was going to happen.”

Montgomery went 120-41-23 with the Bruins but got off to an 8-9-3 start this season and was fired by Boston on Nov. 19 and replaced by Joe Sacco. The Bruins went 65-12-5, the best single season record in NHL history, and had 135 points and an .823 points percentage in Montgomery’s first season (2022-23), when he won the Jack Adams Award voted as the League’s top coach.

“He certainly has a very positive demeanor, works well with the top players in the organizations that he’s been with,” Armstrong said. “I think he has a wealth of experience and he’s at the prime of his coaching career now and we’re the benefactors of that. I just think he’s the full package, or at least we hope he’s the full package.”

Boston lost the 2023 Eastern Conference First Round in seven games to the Florida Panthers, who went on to the Stanley Cup Final, after holding a 3-1 series lead. The Bruins also led the best-of-7 first round 3-1 against the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, then lost the next two games before prevailing 2-1 in overtime of Game 7. They lost the second round to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Panthers in six games.

The Blues have missed the playoffs the past two seasons. They won the Stanley Cup in 2019 by defeating the Bruins in seven games.

“Having Jim here now, I think he can coach a team that’s evolving, and then coach a team that’s evolved and ready to win,” Armstrong said. “I think he has the ability to do that. It reminds me a little bit when we brought Ken [Hitchcock] in over a decade ago, an experienced coach that was coming into a team that was learning and working to grow.

“He was able to maximize that group, and I think that we continue to learn how to win and learn how to be competitive on a nightly basis, ‘Monty’ can push us all to be better and then when we get there, he can take us all to the promised land.”

Montgomery also coached the Dallas Stars from 2018 until he was fired Dec. 10, 2019, going 60-43-10 in 114 games, and is 180-84-33 in 297 NHL games. He returns to St. Louis after being an assistant there for two seasons (2020-22) under Craig Berube.

“It was very exciting, but I was in the mindset when ‘Army’ called I thought this was a social call of, ‘Hey, I’ve been there, keep your head up, take a breath, enjoy the family,'” Montgomery said. “I got a lot of those text messages and calls. Once it turned to business, the engine and my blood started pumping.

“Honest to God, it’s been a whirlwind. The particulars I really don’t want to get into when and all that, I just want to talk about how excited I am to be a Blue. I’m just grateful that Army did make the call.”

As a player, Montgomery, a Montreal native, enjoyed a 12-year career, including stints in Germany, Russia and North America. He played 122 NHL regular-season games, including 67 with the Blues during his rookie season.

Armstrong said Montgomery’s ability to get the most out of a team’s top players is one of his biggest assets.

“Having that relationship with the top players is certainly a benefit for the coach,” Armstrong said. “I think the top players also respond to coaching and his job is to get the best out of them, he’s done that in the past. He’s done it with players in Dallas, they had an excellent team there. He’s done it with the guys in Boston and we feel he can do it here.”

Bannister went 39-31-6 in 76 games as Blues coach after replacing Berube on Dec. 14, 2023. He went 93-58-19 as coach of Springfield in the American Hockey League and guided it to consecutive Calder Cup Playoff appearances, including the 2022 Calder Cup Final. He played 164 NHL regular-season games from 1995-2001 for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and New York Rangers. A defenseman, he was selected by the Lightning in the second round (No. 26) of the 1992 NHL Draft.

Bannister is the second coach to be fired this season.

“When I talked to Drew today, I told him this was more based on the availability of someone I think is a top NHL coach,” Armstrong said, “someone that we have experience and someone that I really do believe can coach this team and coach the team when it reaches its ultimate level of competitiveness.

“He’s done that, he’s worked with younger players in the (United States Hockey League) and college, had good success in Dallas, good success in Boston, so he’s one of those coaches I do believe can be with this team now and as it grows, I think the proof of that is the five-year commitment. One of the things, I think, is the next part for Jim’s career is to get that longevity in one spot.”

The Blues (9-12-1) are sixth in Central Division, 3-6-1 in their past 10 games after losing 3-1 at the New York Islanders on Saturday, and without defensemen Nick Leddy and Philip Broberg. Leddy (lower body) is on injured reserve and has not played since a 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild in St. Louis on Oct. 15. Broberg was projected to be out 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury sustained in a 4-2 win against the Maple Leafs on Nov. 2.

“I think the No. 1 thing is to reconnect with the guys that I worked with previously when I was fortunate enough to be a Blue, create new relationships with the others I haven’t worked with, but most importantly it’s about attitudes and intensity,” Montgomery said. “The energy that we’re going to bring to the rink and the attitude that it’s a ‘we’ thing here.”

“Our season to date has fluctuated,” Armstrong said. “We’re having a hard time on both ends of our special teams and scoring goals and that’s obviously not a good recipe to have success. I think having Leddy and Broberg out at the same time is something that we have to deal with, and we’ve seen growth from certain players, but I think getting those two guys will help stabilize things.”

SENATORS FACE FLAMES ON PRIME MONDAY NIGHT HOCKEY DURING 11-GAME NIGHT

Tonight’s jam-packed 11-game slate is highlighted by Tim Stützle and the Senators hosting Nazem Kadri and the Flames during the latest edition of Prime Monday Night Hockey on Prime Video Canada.

* Stützle has a point in each of Ottawa’s past eight contests at Canadian Tire Centre (5-8—13) – the longest home point streak by a Senators player since 2022-23, when he (11 GP) and Brady Tkachuk (12 GP) had overlapping runs. Should Stützle find the score sheet Monday, he would become the fifth player in franchise history with multiple home point streaks of at least nine contests, following Daniel Alfredsson (6x, most recent: 9 GP in 2011-12), Dany Heatley (3x, most recent: 15 GP in 2007-08), Jason Spezza (9 GP in 2007-08 & 2006-07) and Alexei Yashin (13 GP in 2000-01 & 9 GP in 1998-99).

* The Flames enter Monday with a win in each of their past four games and will look to extend their run to five with the help of Kadri, who has points in all but one contest during their current stretch (0-3—3). The Calgary forward has 14-16—30 in 37 career games against Ottawa – his most goals and points (tied w/ ANA & NYI) versus a single franchise.

* The NHL’s first U.S.-based franchise, the Bruins, will celebrate their 100th anniversary in a special Centennial Game against their longtime Original Six rival, the Canadiens. Flyers rally to down Blackhawks, 3-2, in OT

PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers’ Matvei Michkov hit for the game-winner on Saturday afternoon with a power play strike with 66 seconds gone in extra time for a 3-2 win over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks.

Matvei Michkov #39 of the Philadelphia Flyers scores the wining goal past the outstretched arm of Blackhawks goalie Petr Mrazek #34 in the overtime period.

“There’s not many moments you’re going to get,” Michkov said through an interpreter. “When you get the moment, you have to be cold-blooded and finish it.”

Aleksei Kolosov made 19 saves in the win.

“We kept our patience,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “I don’t think we played poorly by any means, but when we’re down 2-0, we had chances, we couldn’t finish. … I appreciate how the guys just stayed together, kept on playing.”

The Blackhawks had taken a 2-0 lead into the third period on goals from Lukas Reichel and Patrick Maroon.

“I think we just spent too much time in our [defensive] zone,” Chicago coach Luke Richardson said. “Really, most of the game. Our goalie was great all game, but just a couple breakdowns on face-offs and in the [defensive] zone. Just a little bit of panic in our game when we get the puck in the [defensive] zone, and we’re just not making plays. We’re just kind of flipping it out, not getting through that neutral zone. So really, that leads to more D-zone coverage.”

The Flyers rallied on goals from Sean Couturier and Noah Cates in the final frame to force the extra session.

“I think we’ve seen his offensive side of the game since Day 1 of camp,” Couturier said. “I think he’s still learning the defensive side of the game. He’s learning, he’s improving every day, and he wants to get better. It’s nice to see him grow as a player and I’m sure it’s just the beginning.”

Petr Mrazek made 34 saves in the loss.

Recap of NHL for 23 Movember

Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar both reached the 30-point mark to achieve a feat the NHL hasn’t seen in nearly 20 years and help the Avalanche claim victory in an 11-goal contest.

* Gen Z skaters and veterans both had celebratory moments Saturday as Matvei Michkov scored his second career overtime winner and Sidney Crosby reached the 600-goal milestone.

* Eight of Saturday’s 15 games were decided in the third period or beyond, while 11 of them were won by a margin of one goal or two-plus with an empty net.

* Toronto and Utah are set to meet for the first time Sunday in a contest that could feature Alex and William Nylander skating together in the NHL for the first time. It would mark the first time in 37 years the Maple Leafs saw brothers playing in a game.

COLORADO TRIO PROVIDE POTENT OFFENSE IN SEVEN-GOAL OUTBURST

In a battle between two of the past three Stanley Cup champions, it was the Avalanche (2022) who came out on top against the Panthers (2024) thanks to a seven-goal outburst led by Mikko Rantanen (1-3—4) and Cale Makar (0-2—2), who each joined teammate Nathan MacKinnon (0-1—1) at the 30-point mark this season.

* Makar (336 GP) recorded his 100th career multi-point game and became the sixth-fastest active player – and only defenseman in that cohort – to reach the mark, following Sidney Crosby (235 GP), Connor McDavid (270 GP), Alex Ovechkin (272 GP), Kirill Kaprizov (292 GP) and Evgeni Malkin (292 GP). In fact, the only blueliner in NHL history to hit the plateau in fewer games is Bobby Orr (307 GP).

* Of the eight players with 30 points in 2024-25, three belong to the Avalanche (MacKinnon:35, Rantanen: 32 & Makar: 30). The trio helped Colorado improve to 102-24-6 in games where they all record a point.

GEN Z’S SHINE ON SATURDAY’S SLATE

As Gen Z makes a charge to overtake Millennials in the NHL, several of them found the score sheet across the 15-game slate, including Dylan Guenther who helped Utah surge to victory, Tim Stützle who reached a milestone and Matvei Michkov who netted the decisive tally against reigning Calder Trophy winner Connor Bedard.

* Guenther factored on three Utah goals during its 6-1 win Saturday, including scoring twice in the final frame, to help his club earn its largest margin of victory in franchise history. Guenther (21 years, 227 days) became the second-youngest player this season with a multi-goal period and multiple power-play tallies in a game, behind Michkov (19 years, 311 days), who achieved both feats on Oct. 15.

* Stützle (22 years, 313 days) became the youngest Senators player to score his 100th career goal, eclipsing Marian Hossa (23 years, 56 days), and the first player to do so from the 2020 NHL Draft class. Stützle (305 GP) required the seventh-fewest games in franchise history to reach the milestone, behind Dany Heatley (164 GP), Alexei Yashin (253 GP), Martin Havlat (286 GP), Hossa (289 GP), Jason Spezza (290 GP) and teammate Brady Tkachuk (300 GP).

* Facing a 2-0 deficit in the third period, the Flyers rallied to force overtime where 19-year-old Michkov scored the game-winner – just as he did nine days earlier in the club’s only other multi-goal, third-period comeback win of the season (Nov. 14 at OTT). Michkov, who will celebrate his 20th birthday Dec. 9, became the first teenager in franchise history with multiple overtime goals and just the eighth in League history to achieve the feat.

CROSBY SCORES 600TH NHL GOAL

Sidney Crosby scored his 600th career goal and joined Alex Ovechkin as the second active player to reach the milestone. Crosby followed former teammate Mario Lemieux (690) as the second player in franchise history to hit the milestone – Pittsburgh joined Detroit (Gordie Howe & Steve Yzerman) as the only franchises with two 600-goal scorers.

AROUND THE RINKS IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

For all that and more, check out the latest edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates.

  • Rasmus Andersson factored on one of his team’s three goals and tallied the winner in the shootout to help the Flames (12-6-3, 27 points) best the Wild (13-3-4, 30 points) and strengthen their grip over second place in the Pacific Division. Calgary, which earned its fourth straight victory, won its sixth game decided by one goal or fewer this season, which is tied with Boston, Philadelphia and Colorado for the second most behind only St. Louis (7).

* Darnell Nurse scored his sixth career shorthanded goal – which trails only Paul Coffey (15) for the most among Oilers defensemen – and tied Tyler Myers for the most among active blueliners as he helped the Oilers best the Rangers at Rogers Place.

* Elias Pettersson (0-2—2) registered multiple points to help lead Vancouver to its seventh consecutive road victory, tying the third-longest run in franchise history. The Canucks improved to 7-1-0 away from home and maintained the NHL’s best road points percentage (.875).

* Jack Eichel (1-2—3) registered his 15th three-point performance with Vegas, tying William Karlsson for the third most in franchise history. Eichel (21 GP) also became the fastest player in Golden Knights history to 30 points in a season, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Mark Stone (24 GP in 2020-21).

* Roman Josi scored half of the Predators’ goals Saturday to help his club become the fourth team in 2024-25 to earn a win against the Jets. Josi surpassed Craig Smith (20) for the third-most multi-goal games in franchise history, trailing Filip Forsberg (44) and David Legwand (24).

* After the Sharks celebrated Joe Thornton’s career by retiring his number to the rafters, Alex Tuch

(1-0—1) extended his point streak to six games and helped the Sabres (11-9-1, 23 points) sweep a three-game California road trip (ANA, LAK & SJS) for the first time in franchise history. Buffalo moved into the top three in the Atlantic Division for the first time since Dec. 16, 2019 (min 20 GP).

NYLANDER BROTHERS COULD REUNITE WHEN MAPLE LEAFS HOST UTAH

The only game on Sunday’s slate will include many firsts as brothers Alex and William Nylander could skate together in the NHL for the first time when the Maple Leafs and Utah Hockey Club go head-to-head for their first showdown. William Nylander, a prominent figure in FACEOFF: Inside the NHL and the Maple Leafs’ leading goal scorer with 13-9—22 this season (20 GP), went from picking out taps for his condo to finding out he could be playing an NHL game with his brother this weekend (with their father, former NHLer Michael Nylander, in town to witness it).

* Drafted eighth overall two years apart, William and Alex last were teammates at the 2016 World Junior Championship. In their lone contest together, younger brother Alex tallied three assists including a helper on a goal by William just 81 seconds into a game against Switzerland.

* The Nylanders would be the first brothers in more than 37 years to play in a game together for the Maple Leafs and fifth set overall, following Barry and Brian Cullen, Don and Nick Metz, Art and Busher Jackson, as well as Miroslav and Peter Ihnacak. To date, 10 families have had siblings play for the Maple Leafs at any point (including those who never played in a game together).

Recap of NHL for 22 Movember

The Jets continue to soar as the League leaders equaled the second-most wins through 20 games of a season in NHL history.

* Jiri Kulich’s second NHL goal was the overtime winner as the 20-year-old helped Buffalo complete its first multi-goal comeback win of 2024-25.

  • A 15-game Saturday will feature over 11 hours of hockey and six of seven Canadian teams in action across four Hockey Night in Canada games on Sportsnet programming, while fans in San Jose will watch Joe Thornton’s No. 19 rise to the rafters at SAP Center when the Sharks welcome the Sabres.

JETS TIE FOR SECOND-MOST WINS THROUGH 20 GAMES

Kyle Connor (1-1—2) and Josh Morrissey (0-1—1) powered the NHL-leading Jets to victory and helped them secure the second-most wins through 20 games of a season in League history. Of the five other teams on the list, the 1929-30 Bruins went on to make a Stanley Cup Final appearance, while the 2012-13 Blackhawks went on to hoist the championship.

* Connor improved to 13-13—26 and now owns the second-highest point total through this stage of a season (20 GP) in Jets team history, behind Mark Scheifele in 2020-21 (11-17—28). Connor is on pace for 106 points – should he surpass the century mark, he would establish a franchise record for points in a season.

* Morrissey (2-18—20 in 20 GP) followed Cale Makar (28) as the second defenseman this season to 20 points and also joined Makar (2x) and Quinn Hughes (3x) as the third active blueliner to record 18-plus assists through 20 games of a campaign multiple times (also 19 in 2022-23).

FOUR-PACK HIGHLIGHTS HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA SCHEDULE ON 15-GAME SATURDAY

Six of seven Canadian teams are in action on a 15-game Saturday with the Canadiens (7-10-2, 16 points), Canucks (9-6-3, 21 points), Senators (8-10-1, 17 points), Jets (17-3-0, 34 points) and Oilers (10-9-2, 22 points) set to take to the ice as part of Hockey Night in Canada.

* Captain Nick Suzuki leads the Canadiens in points this season (7-12—19 in 19 GP) and can register 20 points through his first 20 games of a campaign for the second time in three seasons (11-12—23 in 2022-23). He can join Mark Recchi (4x; most: 23 in 1996-97), Saku Koivu (3x; most: 26 in 1996-97) and Tomas Plekanec (2x; most: 20 in 2011-12 & 2010-11) as the fourth Montreal skater in the past 30 years to accomplish the feat multiple times.

* Quinn Hughes and the Canucks head on the road for the first time since Nov. 7, where the captain factored on two of his team’s four goals. Hughes, within five assists of tying the most by a defenseman in franchise history, can become the fifth Canucks blueliner to register multiple points in three straight road games; Filip Hronek (3 GP in 2023-24), Mattias Ohlund (3 GP in 1998-99), Jyrki Lumme (3 GP in 1995-96) and Dennis Kearns (3 GP in 1976-77) are the only ones to do so to date.

* Brady Tkachuk and the Senators continue a four-game homestand as the captain sits within striking distance of 200 career assists (171-198—369 in 459 GP). He can join two other members of his family to hit the mark after his brother, Matthew, did so in 397 career games and his dad, Keith, reached the milestone in 439 contests.

* Kyle Connor can join Nathan MacKinnon (2x) and Mitch Marner (2x) as the third player with two multi-point streaks of at least three games this season (4 GP from Oct. 24-30) when his Jets play their second game in as many nights when they visit the Predators. Winnipeg was 6-2-0 in the second half of back-to-backs last season – its .750 points percentage in that scenario was tied for the fourth highest (also PIT: 9-3-0), behind Nashville (.944; 8-0-1), NY Rangers (.917; 11-1-0) and Florida (.813; 6-1-1).

  • Connor McDavid (9-16—25 in 18 GP) is two games removed from his most-recent game-winning goal and has collected 6-13—19 in 13 career contests against the Rangers – a total that includes two winners. The Oilers captain is one game-winning goal shy of tying Glenn Anderson (72) for the most in Oilers history.

SHARKS SET TO RETIRE THORNTON’S No. 19 IN PRE-GAME CEREMONY AT SAP CENTER

Joe Thornton is set to have his No. 19 raised to the SAP Center rafters before Macklin Celebrini and the Sharks square off with Rasmus Dahlin and the Sabres. Thornton will become the second player to have his number retired by the franchise, following longtime teammate and the club’s current hockey operations executive Patrick Marleau (No. 12 on Feb. 25, 2023).

* Thornton’s 24-season career included parts of 15 campaigns with San Jose, which acquired him from Boston via trade on Nov. 30, 2005. Thornton, who won the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophy that season and remains the only player in NHL history to win either award while playing for multiple teams, went on to become the franchise’s all-time leader in assists over the course of his tenure which was highlighted by a trip to the 2016 Stanley Cup Final.

AVALANCHE-PANTHERS GAME WILL HAVE 4 NATIONS FLAVOR

All four teams competing in the 4 Nations Face-Off will be represented when the Avalanche (11-9-0, 22 points) visit the Panthers (12-7-1, 25 points) with Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon from Team Canada, Mikko Rantanen and Aleksander Barkov from Team Finland, Matthew Tkachuk from Team United States, as well as Gustav Forsling from Team Sweden. Full rosters for the 4 Nations Face-Off will be unveiled across two live shows Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024.

  • Rantanen (13-15—28) and Makar (8-20—28) can join MacKinnon (7-27—34) as the club’s second and third 30-point scorers. Should Team Finland’s Rantanen and Team Canada’s Makar record a multi-point game, it would mark the second time the franchise has seen three-plus 30-point scorers at this stage of a season (21 GP as of Saturday). The only instance came with the Nordiques (4 in 1982-83: Marian Stastny, Peter Stastny, Michel Goulet & Anton Stastny).
