Ice Flyers salvage weekend with 3-2 win over Mayhem

PENSACOLA, FLA. – The Ice Flyers hosted the Macon Mayhem on Sunday afternoon for Youth Jersey Giveaway Night presented by Gulf Winds Credit Union, wrapping up an exciting three-game weekend at the Hangar.

Andrew Poulias got the home team on the board first with a goal just past the 5-minute mark in the 1st period. Macon’s Caleb Huffman evened things up with a powerplay goal at the end of the first frame. The second period remained quiet until Sam Rhodes reclaimed the lead for the Ice Flyers with 35 seconds left in the period. However, Huffman tied it up again for the Mayhem early in the 3rd period.

Neither team could find the back of the net in regulation, sending the game to overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the teams headed to their second shootout of the weekend. This time, the Ice Flyers came out on top. Macon made their first two attempts while the Ice Flyers missed theirs, but they stayed in it, making the next four with Sam Rhodes, Cam Gaudette, and Zack Bross keeping the team alive. After Billy Girard made the save on Macon’s 6th attempt, Sam Rhodes sealed the deal with his second shootout goal of the game.

The Ice Flyers will recoup after the long weekend and head to Knoxville for a pair of games on the 23rd and 24th.

Ice Flyers grounded in 2-1 loss to Evansville

PENSACOLA, FLA. – A sellout crowd of 8,082 fans packed the Hangar on Saturday evening for Wiener Dog Race Night presented by PenAir Credit Union, marking the Ice Flyers’ fourth sellout of the season as they took on the reigning league champions, the Evansville Thunderbolts.

Evansville struck first with Derek Contessa scoring the lone goal of the first period. Tyrone Bronte tied things up early in the second period, hoping to shift the momentum in the Ice Flyers’ favor. However, Evansville’s Eelis Laaksonen reclaimed the lead later in the 2nd period.

Both teams struggled to find scoring opportunities in the third period, and Evansville left with a 2-1 victory over the Ice Flyers.

Thunderbolts slip past Ice Flyers, 3-2

PENSACOLA, FLA. – The Ice Flyers hosted Country Night presented by Cat Country 98.7, facing off against the Evansville Thunderbolts in front of 4,427 fans on Friday evening.

The Ice Flyers had control of the game early. Tyler Burnie started the scoring just past the 15-minute mark of the first period, and Zack Jones followed shortly after, extending the lead to 2-0 heading into the 1st intermission.

However, Evansville put the pressure on the Ice Flyers in the second period. Connor Tait tallied their first goal, followed by Joey Berkopec later in the 2nd to tie things up heading into the final frame.

Both teams fought in the 3rd period, with Evansville putting 11 shots on goal and Pensacola putting 8, but neither team scored, sending them to overtime. Overtime remained scoreless, so the teams went to a shootout.

Evansville’s Scott Kirton scored first in the shootout. The Ice Flyers missed their first three attempts, while Billy Girard IV stopped both of Evansville’s 2nd and 3rd attempts. Myles Abbette scored again for the Thunderbolts on their fourth attempt. Sam Rhodes cut the lead. Evansville’s final attempt saw Tyson Gilmour lose his footing, giving the crowd a sense of momentum shift. However, Zack Jones was thwarted on the Ice Flyers’ final shot.

Both teams will see each other again tomorrow night in front of a soon-to-be sold-out crowd for Wiener Dog Race Night.

Dawgs catch Ice Flyers, get 4-2 win in process

PENSACOLA, FLA. – The Ice Flyers hosted Friends and Family Night at the Hangar, squaring off against the visiting Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs in front of a Friday night crowd of 5,803 fans.

The first period was evenly matched, but Roanoke’s Noah Finstrom broke through late in the frame to give the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

The second period saw Andrew Poulias tie the game early with a short-handed goal. However, Roanoke quickly responded with goals from Travis Broughman and Jordan Rosenbaum to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.

The Ice Flyers fought back in the third period, with Zack Bross cutting the deficit to 3-2. Despite a valiant effort to complete the comeback, Roanoke’s Matt O’Dea sealed the 4-2 victory with an empty-net goal in the final seconds.

The Ice Flyers will look to bounce back tomorrow night for 850 Night in a rematch against the Rail Yard Dawgs.

Havoc edge past Ice Flyers, 2-1

PENSACOLA, FLA. – The Ice Flyers hosted Military Appreciation Night presented by Navy Federal Credit Union at the Hangar, squaring off against the Huntsville Havoc in front of a franchise-record non-$5 night sellout crowd of 8,082 fans.

The Ice Flyers struck first in the opening period, with Dawson Sciarrino finding the back of the net on a rebound shot to give the home team an early lead. The Ice Flyers carried the momentum into the first intermission, up 1-0.

The second period saw plenty of action, highlighted by a brawl that had multiple players from both teams going at it. Austin Alger from Huntsville evened the score later in the period, and the game headed into the third tied up.

The third period was evenly matched with both teams having chances on goal, but the Huntsville Havoc came out on top after Austin Alger took advantage of their powerplay following a tripping call on Tyler Burnie.

The Ice Flyers will look to bounce back on Wednesday against the Macon Mayhem.

Ice Flyers run over by Havoc, 5-1

PENSACOLA, FLA. – The Ice Flyers hosted Star Wars Night at the Hangar, squaring off against the Huntsville Havoc in what would prove to be a challenging battle. The Havoc came out flying and controlled much of the play through the opening period, testing the Ice Flyers’ resolve early.

The first period belonged to Huntsville, with Connor Galloway finding the back of the net for the game’s opening goal. The Havoc extended their lead shortly after, and the Ice Flyers headed into the first intermission down 2-0.

The second period saw a more evenly matched contest, with both teams battling hard but neither able to break through. The Havoc registered 7 shots on goal while the Ice Flyers generated 10 shots, but the scoreboard remained unchanged heading into the final frame.

The third period saw the Ice Flyers battle back, but it wouldn’t be enough. Huntsville’s Cole Reginato extended the lead to 3-0 early in the final frame. Tyler German finally put the Ice Flyers on the board later in the period, but the team couldn’t find the momentum needed to complete the comeback. Huntsville’s Giovanna Procopio added another goal shortly after, and Cole Reginato sealed the deal with an empty net goal to secure the victory for the Havoc. The Ice Flyers will look to regroup tomorrow as they take on the Macon Mayhem.
