Carr, Wheeling even series with Idaho

BOISE, ID- Doug Carr and the Wheeling Nailers turned in a perfect performance on Friday night, as they evened their three-game series against the Idaho Steelheads at CenturyLink Arena. Carr turned away all 26 shots he faced, and Garrett Meurs scored two goals, giving the Nailers a 3-0 victory, their 25th of the season.

The Nailers had a phenomenal first period, as they came flying out of the gates with three goals. The first one came at the 8:15 mark when Meurs picked up a loose puck behind the goal, and curled around to the left side, jamming a shot inside of the left post. Two minutes and 43 seconds later, the visitors added to their advantage. Kevin Schulze utilized his speed to create a shorthanded rush up the left side of the ice. As he skated deep into the offensive zone, Schulze centered a pass to Tyler Currier, who whipped a shot into the left side of the cage. With under ten seconds remaining in the stanza, Wheeling struck again. A hit in the right corner kicked the puck into the slot, where it was powered home by Meurs for his second goal of the period.

The final two frames were all about the defense and goaltending for the Nailers, who played a smart and complete game from start to finish. Wheeling limited Idaho to just two power play opportunities and 26 total shots on goal, skating away with the 3-0 triumph.

Carr earned his first shutout as a Nailer and the fourth of his professional career, denying all 26 shots he faced. Branden Komm took the loss for the Steelheads, giving up three goals on 28 shots.

The Nailers and Steelheads will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday night at 9:10 p.m. Eastern time.
