Carolina rout Bruins, 7-1

In Boston, the Carolina Hurricanes make quick work of their efforts on Tuesday night; they scored five times in the first period en route to a 7-1 win over the Bruins.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi hit for a pair of goals for the Hurricanes.

Frederik Andersen made 31 saves in the Carolina win.

Patrice Bergeron was the lone goal scorer for the Bruins.

“It’s problematic against anybody,” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We’re building our game, and have been playing well lately, much better than the start of the year, but obviously not tonight. We had nothing. They were clearly better than us in every area. … We didn’t compete.”

Jaccob Slavin had a goal and three points for the Canes.

“It’s easy when the team plays that well, to step back into it and just play simple,” Slavin said. “It was an easy game to come back to with how hard the guys competed. … We’ve had some rough starts this year, especially the past little bit. Our focus has been getting off to a good start and not getting behind in games.”

Carolina improved to 26-8-2.

Teuvo Teravainen and Kotkaniemi put the Canes up 2-0 before Bergeron’s power play goal.

Kotkaniemi and Seth Jarvis pushed the lead to 4-1.

Derek Stepan closed out the first period barrage for a 5-1 lead after 20 minutes.

“Our mindset coming into the game was in the right spot from the beginning,” Stepan said. “This was one of the good games that right from the start, we did a lot of the things we wanted to. That’s what you need on a consistent basis. Nothing changes going into the next one.”

Carolina added two excuse me goals in the third period from Slavin and Andrei Svechnikov who scored off power play chances. power-play

Tuukka Rask got the start for Boston and was given the hook in the first intermission.  He made seven saves and surrendered the five first period goals.

“I’ve got to help them out a little bit,” Rask said. “Everybody’s not going to have their legs, so at times as a goalie you have to step up and make a couple saves. In the first, I should have made two or three saves there to keep it tight. It’s one of those nights. … One thing you learn over the years: You’re never as bad or as good as you think. You learn to keep it even keel and trust the process.”

Linus Ullmark finished the game with 20 saves.
